Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 19m 14s
Overall Rank = 30/297
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 4/16
Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5:15, had some granola with soy yogurt and a little coffee and headed out to Interlochen. Set up my transition then hung out at the beach for a while. This was my first tri ever, so I was pretty nervous, especially concerning the swim.
Event warmup:

Stood on the beach in the rain for about forty five minutes waiting for my wave (last one).
Swim
  • 15m 20s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wow. I knew the swim was going to brutalize me and it definitely fulfilled that expectation. I kept my calm as I am comfortable in the water, but I could not get any speed. I didn't feel that I neglected the swim during training, but apparently I didn't do it enough. This was my first tri so hopefully I can pull it together for my next one in a month.
What would you do differently?:

More OWS.
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

Had my shoes in my pedals, but I was stuck behind a few guys walking through the transition area, so I had to walk behind them for about 30 yds before getting around and jumping on my bike. About a 150yd run from the water up to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster so as not to get stuck behind slower people in the transition.
Bike
  • 37m 37s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 19.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Didn't push too hard on the bike because I wanted to be fresh for the run and not bonk in my first tri. Stayed comfortable the whole time and now that I've got a race under my belt I'd feel more comfortable pushing a bit more.
What would you do differently?:

Could definitely ride harder here.
Transition 2
  • 01m 1s
Comments:

Went as well as can be expected.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 22m 39s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

I was still nervous about bonking here and held back a little too long. I didn't pick up my pace until less than a mile to go. I had a lot left in the tank at the end of the race. Despite a layoff last year for knee surgery I've been a runner for awhile and this the leg I have the most confidence in.
What would you do differently?:

Not conserve so much energy.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a piece of pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was really nervous about bonking as this was my first tri and so I had too much energy after the race. However, I'd rather have conserved energy and not crashed and burned because then I would have been really disappointed in myself. Now I feel a bit more confident about pushing harder during the bike and run. I also need to swim much more in training.

Event comments:

A lot of fun and I am definitely hooked. Can't wait for the next one!

Good job Northrider! Your results show that you clearly are a runner! (good biker too) Running is where I need to do my most training for now as I am not much of a runner yet. I am glad you had fun on your first Tri. I was walking around the beach before the swim going up to guys saying "Northrider?" but finially got enough strange looks that I gave up LOL. Sorry I didn't keep searching and find you. What is your next Triathlon? I am doing the Olympic at Ludington at the end of August. Maybe I can still get up north one of these weekends and we can do an OWS in the big lake.

Northrider 99 - Nice first race and report. I was there also and really enjoyed the tri. Especially the cheering kids on the run.

Yeah, I forgot to keep my eyes peeled for you and ask around because I was so nervous. I'm doing Escape to Crystal Lake in August and the Autumn Colors (or something like that) in Holly in September.

Slick, I definitely got a boost from the kids too, gave out many high fives during the run.
