Pre-race routine:

Event warmup:

15 minutes running with some high steps and heel flicks to get loose and warm. 10 minutes of swimming. ran out of time to swim more
Swim
  • 37m
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 16s / 100 yards
Comments:

I seem to forget how to swim during this race. First 200m seemed great I was hanging with group. I felt someone touch my toes so I kicked to discourage them grabbing me and suddenly I was very breathless. I rolled onto back and flutter kicked to regain composure. After about a minute I rresumed freestyle. I rounded bouy great and then cam the long stretch. This is where I started to wander. I think a combination of inexperience of swimming in the suit combined with my shoulder problem is causing me to change my stroke and swim crooked. Mentally I couldn't get into a rhythm. when I finally got to the beach I immediately stripped my suit. It is a 1/4 mile run to T1 and I knew it would be faster to srtip suit while wet and run unencumbered.
What would you do differently?:

Swim straight and swim like I train (duh)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Very short run from rack to mount line. Put shoes on in T1 and jumped on bike. It pays to practice :)
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 17m 24s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.26 mile/hr
Comments:

I was playing catch-up from the poor swim. I kept that in mind becuase I was passing so many people and didn't want it to go to my head. I may have been able to go a little faster but I wanted a strong run this year.
There were many draft packs and groups blocking the whole road making it hard to keep my own pace.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 smooth. dismount and racking great. Shoes and number on and out the gate w/o sitting down
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 48m 7s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt stiff coming off bike, of course. I focused on a snappy step with good turnover to keep fresh and not try and force myself to loosen up. I gradually got up to pace. After that I felt like I was locked into a pace and couldn't surge if I wanted to. I was a slightly submaximal and probably could have pushed a wee more. But I had the tiniest twinge of a stomach creeping up and I didn't want to implode.
My head was in the race and I picked off a few runners and let the one go I knew I couldn't catch.
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder
Post race
Warm down:

eat banana, r u kidding? who warms down? we all talk and eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My fitness level and poor swimming

Event comments:

Better organized and marked than last year. No events on base unfortunatly. I am disappointed with the swim and it is shading my accompishemnts. I had a good race, a better time, good eating and drinking.
