Subject: walking w/dog
hey everyone- here's a more lame question [ i know no questions are lame, but it's getting pretty darn close]

i usually dress myself and my greyhound up for the blustery cold... and after all those layers- why should i make the walk 5 minutes right? So, we usually go for about 15-25 minutes, should I count this towards my training hours?

I'm just starting out and on the calendar these 20-25 min walks should be happening anyways, but on top of that are the walks with my greyhound.

I walk my dog for 20-60 mins a day usually but have always done that (for 7 years anyway!) so I didn't count them as training times when I started as I was already 'used' to doing it. I counted training as something I wasn't already doing so added everything on top. If it's new to you, then count in into your plan, otherwise IMHO I'd not count it.

You could always structure your walk time eg steady faster pace, lots of hills etc, run/walk (a greyhound would be a better training partner than my labrador!) and use the time as training? I try and walk Max for 15-20 mins immediately before a run/cycle and it's agreat warm-up.

I count walking the dog, but not as running. It is an activity. The dog is my housemates, and I don't walk it everyday. When I do, it is often an hour or more. The last time it was in deep powder snow. That was a work out, and wears the dog out for a calm evening. It can also be a good warm up.

It depends on where you are at. If you are brand new to running and walk more than run, then you should factor this in as part of your training. If you are an experienced runner, it's probably just a good stretch and recovery for your legs and not really a factor in training. If you want, just watch it in your blog under sports/walking and track it there so you can look back later if have feelings of over training.

I think it's up to you, but walking will definately help burn fat, sounds like walking may be a good idea for me.

Wish I had a dog!

It's training. I consider it my recovery training. I walk my dog at least an hour a day. I don't feel the need to do recovery workouts because the dog walking takes care of that. Glauco, a local cycling coach and bike shop owner, said after my big meltdown in Roth, "You walk your dog and hang out in my shop instead of riding your bike and you wonder why you blow up in the Ironman." It's training but it doesn't replace training.
I started running with my sister's puppy 6 years ago. I used the lift the bull theory. As the dog got older we ran further and a year and a half later we were putting down 30 km runs easily. Then I went and biked across Canada and the dog put on 13 pounds and refused to run with me when I got back. He has since lost the weight and I have gotten my own dog. She's a hound and is very fast but stubborn. We negotiated that she will do 5km runs, which is good for a dog. My sister's dog is often willing to come with us as well.

LMAO.

Oh yes.

I used to bike in the UK with the family – just a little 6 mile ride. I had the dog (big german shepard) and we had an agreement as well. I was allowed to go as fast as I liked and he reserved the right to stop twice without any warning to go check something out.
Made for interesting rides.

I used to run with my labrador, Max, but suffered from the same problem, as he stopped without warning at random lamposts - not funny with a 30kg dog attached to your arm!

He's also a hard trainer who just wont do low intensity runs so we agreed to train with different partners - me with my lonesome and him with his greyhound pal down the road!

I loved your posts! I'm having the same trouble on negotiating an aggreement- being a sighthound, she's wanting to reserve the right to cross my path to get to what ever she sees 10 miles ahead or around her. THIS i know will be a problem when we get to jogging.....

so far- the frozen tundra of illinois is giving both of us a great work out, as i get home all sweaty and she out of breath. And i think this is how i'll base it on... if i feel out of breath [which i found singing to my hound to keep her nerves down, gets me there real fast] then it'll be a work out. otherwise, a nice recovery activity.

maybe i should look for a forum site on adopted ex-race greyhounds.... i might get lucky enough to find one other person who is a triathlete in training AND is training/has trained their greyhound.

again, thanks for your advice, experience, and humor! I love this forum.
