Subject: Total Sprint Program
Hi All,

This is a great site, and has provided this swimmer with the incentive to try a tri :-)

I have my first Sprint Tri penciled in (Nov 2004) which gives me 44 weeks before the race. I have everything I need, including a wet suit and an old mountain bike for training. After 6 months of training, I'll splurge on a road bike, probably an Avanti Sprint (http://www.avantibikes.com/bikes_detail.asp?id=141&t=7), as they come in my size (XXL), and are good value for money.

As a big guy (6' 5" and 253 lb), I thought I would use a modified version of Michael Pates Total Sprint Program. Instead of swimming 3 times a week, I'll swim once, as the swim is no problem. That leaves 3 bikes and 3 walks/runs per week to work the weight off.

I also thought I would double the length of the program, from 22 weeks to 44 weeks, to ensure that my body has the necessary time to adapt. My aim to comftably finish, somewhere in the middle of the pack. should this training program enable me to accomplish that goal?

Cheers,

richard.

Richard –I’m doing the sprint program aiming for August. I started with Michael’s program but I am using it as a guideline – once I find the right distances then I increase the in the same increments that Michael suggested. I suggest you do that and use the training logs on here to monitor your progress – you may even find yourself ready before November!

Have fun.

The program is only a guideline for someone to get started and when I wrote the program it was my hope that someone would use it as a starting mark and go from there. Make the progam work for you and play to your strengths and weakneses as you are doing and you will be ready. As far as finishing in the middle of the pack by then,-----well that all usually comes down to how big the tri is and how many of the atheletes are those fast types. Shoot for your goal and I am sure you will have a great chance of achieving it.

Michael – your program is a great starting point for anyone.

I’ve used it as a base for my abilities which means I’m in week 2 but am using the week 2 run bit from your program, the week 4 swim and the week 7 bike – mainly because running is my worst event and the bike is the one I find easiest.

I think the most important thing is to plan the program out and use the incremental increase similar to the ones you suggested. Without ythe program I would have had no clue where to start!
