Do you think it would be weird to wear a mask (the hospital one) outside during peak cold/flu season? e.g., subway, ects.

Um, yes. LOL!

Well, I would think someone who's doing it is weird. But I guess then I'd figure, well, they must be particularly vulnerable or colds/flus are particularly dangerous to them. I'd say for a 100% healthy adult human being, it's weird.

When I get colds, they usually migrate to a nasty bronchiol infection (i have asthma) that leaves me out for at least two weeks.

Ok, well that puts you in the 'colds/flus are particularly dangerous' category, so while I think you should expect stares and weird looks, you're justified. So you either care or you don't. Why don't you just carry a bottle of hand sanitizer with you so you can wash your hands the second you step off the subway?

I already do that :-) I think I'm ocd when it comes to germs. I HATE people hacking and sneezing around me, particularly when they don't make an effort at covering their mouths.

I've seen people who wear medical masks semi-frequently around town. I have always wondered if they are effective in their prevention of cold / flu / illness / etc. If they are effective I'd say go ahead and wear one. And yes, I do think they are weird but quite frankly who / what isn't weird these days? Go ahead and wear it.

I've got to go with "yes" as well.

But, when I see someone with a mask I, like DaveG, just wonder if it works, I never say anything to them.

So, if it will keep you healthy, and you don't mind people staring at you, wear one.

Now, I wonder, will you take it off to order and, if so, what kind of reaction do you think you’ll get from the person you are ordering from? Maybe they will think YOU are sick and now you're contaminating them. LOL!

Cheers,
Rob

I bet it (wearing the mask) helps, but not for the reason people would think. As I understand it (and I'm no disease vector expert), it's not airborne germs that get you so much as touching germy things and then touching your mouth or nose. So the mask would prevent you from touching your mouth and nose.

I'm also of the mind that getting little illnesses now and then isn't bad for you in the long run, that it'll boost your immune system (this is, of course, with the caveat that you are a generally healthy adult). I try to keep things pretty clean, but I won't use anti-bacterial soaps because a) a little dose of germs now and then boosts the immune system, b) that stuff build up the bacteria's resistance, c) anti-bacterials stay in the water, you can't treat them, so they end up in streams. I think the anti-bacterial craze is a real bane to public health.

Kind of a Michael Jackson look?

I you think it will help you then go for it and who cares what everyone thinks...

In some cultures it is far more common than in the US.

When I was in Japan I noticed lots of people wearing masks in public. Gloves, too - not surgical latex but really thin cotton-like materials.

If you're the one with the cold/flu, then yes, it would be a good idea to wear a mask in public.

While watching Good Morning America this morning, I learned the answer to this question. Some flu expert said that wearing a mask is great to protect those around you if you are sick, but won't help much at all to protect you. So no need to look like a freak. ;-)

You'd be better off remembering to wash your hands frequently. The mask will protect other people if YOU have a cold, but not so much the other way around.

i have asthma too, so i sympathize. it will also go straight to my chest. i really hope i can make it through this winter w/o developing bronchitis. having two kids means i'm constantly around cold germs at playgroups and what not, so i was my hands religiously.

Short answer:  Yes!

Long answer:  Yes, it would be weird if you wore a mask!  However, if you are particularly susceptible to cold/flu's then by all means do so and the heck with what others think!

here's the thing, i was under the impression that not only can you get sick from spreading germs via your hands, but also airborne germs such as someone sneezing and spreading lingering viruses, germs in the air..is this not the case?

Yes, it's true that you CAN get sick from airborne germs. But the question is will the mask protect you from that. And the answer is maybe, at best. First off, the mask has to fit perfectly. Moreover, regular surgical masks won't work. You'd need one with mesh that filters particles of .3 microns. They are available, but you'd have to hunt a bit. And finally, there's the subjective question of whether or not wearing a mask is worth the geek factor. Even with a mask that fits and filters appropriately, you're statistically better off supporting your immune system by getting enough sleep, eating well, maintaining your physical fitness, and washing your hands.

I don't really know how it all works, that's just what the flu expert on the TeeVee told me! ;-)
