Age Group Rank = 2/
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30am, packed up the car and checked out of the hotel. I knew it would be a hot day when the temp was 77 at 5am!! Had PB on whole wheat bread, a banana and bottle of GU2O. Drove to the course, got body marked and set up transition, had a great spot both on the rack and in the area in general.
Event warmup:

Light jogging with a few pick ups and then stretching. Got the wetsuit on and briefly swam.
Swim
  • 28m 36s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim to first buoy was tough. We were swimming out as the tide was coming in. This was the roughest wave start I've had. I got hit in the face a few times, and swam over some people. There was a lot of congestion going out. Coming in for the second loop I got out of the water and ran down the beach a bit. Thankfully I found clean water for the second loop and caught some more people. This was a much better swim time for me, but unfortunately I still lost the age group win in the swim, came out 8:02 behind the age group winner.
What would you do differently?:

More speed sets in the pool. I really need to log more swim practice.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

T1 has been trouble lately. The suit got stuck on my chip again, e verything else went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Practice T1 more, I've got to get that suit off faster. I lost about 4 seconds to the person I was chasing.
Bike
  • 1h 07m 49s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Hammered the bike and met my goal of getting off the bike under 1:15. Could have managed my gears a little better. There were a few packs on the bike as it got congested when the rest of the field came out of T1. Made up 1:52 on my target.
What would you do differently?:

More T.I.T.S, I've been neglecting the bike lately in favor of the swim/run. It shoewed today, I should have been able to push fasater.
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

Good smooth T2, I've got this one down. Shoes went on quick, grabbed the race belt, 2 gels and was off. Pulled back 23 seconds on my target in T2.
What would you do differently?:

Be even cleaner and more precise, I can still shave some time off this one.
Run
  • 40m 29s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 06m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

Today was the day that my run didn't pull me through. My legs weren't feeling too fresh. I ran hard, but missed my goal of 38 mins. Pulled back 5:26 on the AG winner.
What would you do differently?:

More preparation, and push myself mentally a little more.
Post race
Warm down:

Saw my parents, said hello then off to jog the course backwards and cheer on the other athletes, did a little light stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I've been slacking on cycling and bricks. I came in undertrained and it showed. Had I know I was gaining so much time on the eventual AG winner I would have gone harder on the run,I should have anyway. The run was hurting but now I feel like I could have eeked out those 25 secs I needed to win, It was tough placing 2nd by 20 seconds. I can't be too disappointed though, I almost erased an 8min defecit from the swim.

Event comments:

In my head I had decided today was the day I'd win my AG. I met all my time goals except the run, I really should be happy with the race. I'm still a little let down, but I have to remember it's only my first season. Now I've got the "off season" to work hard and place well in 25-29 next year. I'll be back to race this one again in '08.

Nice race today, yeah I think everyone's run time was impacted today it was hot and on that flat course no chance to get out of the aeros and stretch. Glad you enjoyed the course I really disliked it 5 loops on that congested course was a nightmare in my humble opinion.

man your run time is fast great job...
