This in an interesting story about a plaque at a Canadian war museum which the veterans object to and have asked to have changed. The museum was resistant but has now agreed to change it.

I think the museum should never have agreed to change it. What do you think?

Correction: The Canadian War Museum is where the controversy is. Here's a better link:

I think the veterans were justified in being upset by the language on the plaque.

It is not fair to compare the techniques of WWII warfare to todays standards.

I don't know if they are doing that. My concern is that this could end up redefining history to make it more palatable than it was. Also, as you can see at the bottom of the 2nd article, now other groups are trying to pressure the museum to alter their descriptions of other historical events.

That was the way I took it.  I don't like revisionist history either.

If they want to lay out the facts, fine.  Editorializing, not so fine.

I see both sides. As a vet of the USAF I can understand their anger because it does make them look bad. The sad thing, though, is that it's all true. You can't blame them, though, because it was their job to bomb the everloving crap out of the enemy with the best methods of the day. All this is saying is that there are no winners in war. Everybody loses. I think it should stay because it's factually correct.

The Dutch, for one, who continue to send tulips to Canada every year in thanks for having been liberated by Canadian troops.

I know the above comment is meant as a joke, but Canada lost 45,300 troops out of a population of 11,267,000 in WWII.

While Jimmy Carter was president, the Iranian students stormed the US embassy and held 66 US citizens hostage. Six US citizens escaped the embassy and 3 took refuge in the Canadian embassy for three months, hidden by the Canadians at great personal risk. The Canadians eventually smuggled all six out of Iran using Canadian passports. The Canadians have laid it all on the line many times as a US ally. It has gone both ways, too. Before the US entered WWII, many US citizens, including my uncle, went to Canada and enlisted in order to fight for Canada, as part of the British Commonwealth, against Hitler's Germany. My uncle, who was a bombardier, died when his plane went down on a mission. Its still fun to tease Canadians, though, eh?

Thanks for understanding the little "poke".  I would never trivialize any nation, or any individual for that matter, who has lost men or their own lives defending freedom.  I never allow a veteran of any country to pay for their own drinks if I know they are in the same bar as me.

BTW: Are you guys ever going to take your Stanley Cup back?

I would never trivialize any nation

This is not entirely true..there is that matter of the French

Anytime!  I've seen at least 2 people post on here saying they are currently in Iraq and I thought it would be great if we could ship them a BT care package of tri stuff.  Just not sure of the reception here, nor the logistics of it all.
