So, besides not swimming, what's the difference? The one I'm looking at is a road one, so can I use my tribike without looking retarded? There's still a transition area right? Any other differences I should know about?

Transition zones is pretty much the same as a tri. Yes, use the tri bike.

As for what else? That second run will be much harder than the run in a tri...

Hmm. Why is that? I would have thought it would be the same as the run in a tri.

The second run is well...rough! Do a lot of brick workouts...and then run some more. Other than that everything else will be the same.

Yes, use your tri bike, you will have the same advantages as in a tri using sticking to your tri bike.

Make sure you do some reversed bricks, i.e. go for a race pace run the same distance as your first run on the Du and then jump on your tri bike for a quick couple of miles. You will find that it does take a bit getting "used" to the bike after the run. As everyone has already said, the second run is 90% mental strength and 10% running ability. It will hurt, but it is a blast at the same time.

I really miss Du´s.... here in Sweden we only have one and that´s the nationals each year. Sticking to cycling until we get back to the States again.

As others have said, that second run is a BEAR!!  Much harder than the run in a Tri.  It's because you've beaten up your legs before the ride and then you do it again.  The swim portion you don't beat your legs up.

Transition area is the same as in a Tri, so use your Tri bike.  What I did, go out about 80% for the first run, hammer the bike and survive the last run.  It was a Nasty surprise at my first Duathlon!  Duathlon bricks are a good way to go.  I did a good one yesterday if you want to mimic that.

Oh, and you don't have to wear a swimcap and wetsuit either.

Seriously though, would say its good to go out and do some bricks in both directions (run-bike and bike-run). That would help a ton. Pacing on the first run can be troublesome if you haven't experimented with it. Also, when you ditch your run stuff in T1 make sure it put down organized enough that you can find it again. Some people get rushed and since you are reusing the gear (unlike following the swim in a tri) it would help to have it ready.

For example, if you use regular laces you will want them open enough to get stuff on again later.

Enjoy,

Michael

One thing I did to get ready for the Duathlon Nationals was to run the combined running distance of 15K and then go for the 40K bike ride as a brick. Recover for a few days with light workouts and then reverse the workout for a 40K bike and 15K run. I did this a couple of times. Definitely use Yanks or other speed laces as you want quick transition times since you could be changing shoes twice.

My 1st event will be a durathlon tomorrow.  It is short but it is funny to hear all these comments about the durathlon being harder.  I guess since I do not know anything else, it is just what has to be done.

At this point, for me a tri seems like it would be harder but that is because I have not started swimming yet.  That will all change as in 2 months I will be doing a sprint tri.

I'm not sure I would say it's tougher than a tri. Triathlons are harder for me because I'm not a strong swimmer. But, the tris I've been in I've been able to hammer it hard the whole way. With Duathlons I have to kind of plan it out a bit. Someone above said something like Ease up a little on the first run, hammer the bike and survive the last run. That puts it perfectly! My runs are consistent but when I did nationals my pace on the second run was 30 seconds slower than on the first!

Not so much that du's are harder than tri's as a whole, just that the second run in a du is harder than the single run in a comparable tri. The one I did last year, my second 5K (it was a sprint distance) was 1:30 slower than my first...and I really felt like I was motoring...
