Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 55s
Overall Rank = 68/281-M
Age Group = 45-49M
Age Group Rank = 8/33
Pre-race routine:

Up early, light breakfast of turkey on a minibagel and a banana. Coffee too, of course. On the road at 6:30, picked up a friend at 7:00, and at the race site by 8:00. Plenty of time for packet pickup, setup, etc.
Event warmup:

A short run, maybe 10 minutes tops, a little swimming before my wave.
Swim
  • 14m 57s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim went very well. I was a bit surprised by the time, which seemed slow. Based on my placement, I think that it was a bit long. Sighting and navigation were really solid, and I felt in the zone the entire time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Solid T1 -- 5/33 in my AG. Got out of the suit well.
What would you do differently?:

I suppose I should learn how to start the ride with the shoes already on the bike (at least for sprint tris) -- just a little delay in getting clipped in at the start.
Bike
  • 35m 23s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.08 mile/hr
Comments:

Relatively speaking, the bike is still my "weak" point. But there was only a minute separating my 11/33 placement with 5th place in the age group. Traffic was an issue at times, as I caught up to many of the women riders and younger men who started before me. Some of them were totally clueless about riding to the right, so I was doing a lot of shouting "on your left," and "stay right!" Read the rules, folks!
What would you do differently?:

21 mph average -- I'm happy with that, and I'm only going to get faster next year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Took a turn down the wrong row. D'oh! Otherwise good. Had to put a sock on my right foot because of a blister on one of my toes, so that added just a bit of time.
What would you do differently?:

Turn at the correct rack!
Run
  • 22m 42s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

Good solid run. A couple of twinges in my calf muscles as I started running, but I kept my steps short and cadence high, and soon I was stretched out and running well. Lots of people from previous waves to chase down, so that gave me some nice incentive. Good strong kick at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Solid run.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a couple of drinks, then watched for people I knew to finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Performed right up to my ability level, a very solid race. It's just a matter of working hard during the winter and I'll be stronger next season. I was very pleased with my AG and overall placement. All of my times were within the top 33%, not only for my AG, but also for overall men. I feel like I have moved from FOMOP (Front Of Middle Of the Pack), to BOFOP (Back Of the Front Of the Pack). If I can shave off 3-4 minutes I've got a realistic shot at placing.

Event comments:

SetUp Events always pulls these off without a hitch. Great setting, great race. Maybe a few too many people for a sprint tri, but there were a lot of newbies having a good time, and that's a good thing.

Nice race!  Top 1/3 of your AG is definitely the BOFOP.  Did you try any of that Brunswick Stew?  Not my thing.  Work hard over the winter and we can remove the "BO" from the acronym!  See you out there sometime!

Love the Brunswick Stew -- had a cup of it with a beer at my truck -- perfect post-race meal.
