Pre-race routine:

Meet up w/ buddy. COSTUME UP!
Event warmup:

Stretch, short jog.
Run
  • 4h 14m 56s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 09m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Stayed on pace until about mile 21-22 then I think I pretty much started to BONK. Really hit it at about mile 25, definite BONK!
I ate and drank enough and had great inspiration. I think the makor problem was that I could not get my HR down to a good level. Started high and went higher. We both knew I was gonna tank, the question was when and where. HR started at 175 and averaged 184 but peaked on the last hills at 193. Pace felt like a RPE 6-7 but hills were 9's for sure.
I did drink a lot (water, gatorade not booze)in the days prior, carbs were upped in the days prior so nutrition was OK. I train on this course and have to do hills alot because I live on top of a pretty good one.
Also, I do think ,in retrospect, that I was pushing my old bod to the limits. My 1/2 IM was only a few weeks ago and the marathon training was a bunch of long weeks to close together.
But, hey, I did obtain several goals, the IMPORTANT ones!! I HAD FUN and STAYED HEALTHY! I had a PERSONAL BEST run aand shaved over 20 min. off previous time. I also had SOOO much support from everywhere! especially from ALL here at BT!!
What would you do differently?:

Give more time between "ultra" distance events.

Post race
Warm down:

Little walking around. Put feet up and get some nutrition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

BONK, wind resistance of hula skirt and mardi gras beads, etc.(LOL)

Event comments:

I would recommend this race for anyone. Great scenery and good spectator support.

SEE PICS IN BT ALBUM and have a good laugh, while I crawl back in my hole and recharge. This crowd attention is very draining.

FINALLY! Your fans were getting restless! That's so awesome that you beat your previous by so much on a more difficult course!

Love the pics in the album! Thanks for sharing!

Did you at least once have that song in your head during that whole 4:15? Just once?

Ah, quite a bit more that once May!!, (maybe I should have put that under limiting factors, (the wacky off beat tune, not the inspiration LOL))

I just knew that I couldn't let my buds down and DNF.

The hula skirt was a fabulous touch. How can you NOT have a smile on your face running a marathon in that?

Glen

Great race. It sounds as if you had a blast (except for the bonking part).  Do hula skirts chafe?
