sealiongirl - 2007-11-23 8:14 PM I'm super excited, but just got the email update. They are now saying the bike is 14 miles (not 12) and that the run is 4.5 miles (not 4). I'm a little freaked and don't know that I would have signed up for this had I known that. I've only raced 11 miles on the bike, though I've done up to 16 in training. However, I've only run 3 miles...and only twice. I've never run 4.5. That's half again as much. So...I'm freaked. This run is too long. I was leary of signing up for 4 and probably would not have for 4.5. Aarrgghh!

Just remember will be there cheering for you.

YIKES! I just checked my e-mail and saw they changed the distances! Is that normal...I find that kind of wierd...anyway gotta roll with it I guess. Im confused, did the swim distance change? It says ??mile...what does that mean? Well tomorrow will be my first open water swim. Im anxious and excited for it all. Im not sure what to throw on for the bike because I know it will be cold. If any veterans out there have any last minute advice for the newbies Id love some! Im excited to go out and have fun and just finish...trying not to put any expectations on myslef as this will be my first time in a race since my highschool swim days over 10 years ago! Not a big runner so this extra .5 mile could be brutal, and using my sis-in-laws mountain bike which Im unfamiliar with. Okay it's all out on the table and there is no turning back. Just do it right?! Good luck everyone!!! - Liz

Hey Liz, just have fun you'll do fine. I'm sure the swim distance won't change since they can adjust the the turn around point. As far as the rest of the course they obviously didn't measure it out. By the way it will be my first Tri also so you won't be alone. Here's to finishing your first tri.

Liz, I too was alarmed by the distance changes as I'm not much of a runner. You will NOT be the only one out there who is not a strong runner. There will be lots of us and we'll have a good time! Despite the distances, I've heard it is a fun, beautiful course, so I think we're all in for a great day tomorrow.

So, everyone rest up today, stay off your legs, pack your bag and think happy, speedy thoughts! See ya tomorrow!

Finally got up here to my hotel, and had a chance to check out the bike route.

Wow! Assuming I was on the right road, I sure hope everyone brought their climbing gear. The route definitely seems like a hilly one, but at least the road seemed fairly well maintained.

It was dark, so I couldn't really see what the parking situation looked like, but considering its a pretty big park, I've got to believe it should be ok. Either way, I plan on trying to be there at 6 am to be sure.

Weather.com expects an air temp of 49* at 8 am tomorrow. Not ideal considering I've been in bed with a nasty cold since Weds. My goal is now just to live.

Great pics! Definitely some great support out there today and glad to see everyone lived.

Overall, I agree with mixie that it started out a bit disorganized, but not bad for an inaugural event. Definitely have the makings for a race to continue repeating each year.

I did horribly on the swim, no other way to state it. First time swimming in freshwater in the wet suit, and you definitely are less buoyant than in the salt. Not an excuse for the way I swam. I think I just need to focus on being calm, and finding a good rhythm. Came out of the swim right around 20 minutes, which surprised me, as I expected to see more like 30.

The bike course I thought was a ton of fun. Some hills, but nothing too bad, and the down hills were a blast. Hit a very comfortable 42 mph during one down hill section, which thus far is the fastest I've been since keeping track. Bike time was ~52 minutes.

The run was fun, but I definitely was feeling gassed by the end. Couldn't feel my toes until mile 2 (note to self: buy those cycling shoe covers for cold weather riding). I definitely prefer out and backs or single loops like this, as opposed to laps. Running around the lake gave you enough of a sense of where you were that that it kept the motivation levels up as the end got closer. According to my GPS, the run took 47:28 and was 4.68 miles total.

In the end, I finished with I believe 2:09.x on the clock when I ran through. Still going to be back of the pack in my AG, but still was a great experience. Can't wait until they post the final results.

Glad to hear everyone seemed to have a great day out there!

Hey everybody! Glad to hear you all had fun today. It was great to meet you Verna and Hector. Hector, thanks so much for the picture. That was very cool of you!

I had my worst race yet. I feel bad saying that amid the happiness of everyone else. I won't go into the details here, but I have a LONG race report for anyone who wants to read. It had more to do with my illness and injuries than the couse itself. I'm super disappointed, but am glad I finished. I am in a lot of pain, so I dread tomorrow! Yikes!

Can't wait to read all of your race reports!

Sealion girl, you are not alone. I went into the race feeling really confident and relaxed but my performace was poor. I cramped in my hamstrings at the second buoy. I swam with my arms only for the rest of the swim. I limped thru T-1 and had a decent ride but the cramps were still there. My run was slow and I was on the verge of cramps the whole way.
Well I fininshed and that was the point. I just wanted to feel better than I did during the race.
I'm glad everyone had a great time. Wish I could have met some of you.
My next race will be in Havasu in March.

Well, today is a new day and I feel better about yesterday. I'm surprisingly less sore than last night and don't really feel sick. I'm mostly just stiff. Writing race reports helps me get my head around an event, and after having done so I feel like there were good things about this race, and I was focusing too much on the negative.

Good Things about the Turkey Tri

  • beautiful venue
  • cool long sleeve t-shirt
  • convenient for my family
  • better run from swim to T1 than usual
  • best transition spot ever
  • did well in clipless pedals (first race in them) even having to clip in and out several times
  • hit highest bike speed ever at 38 mph
  • climbed hills I didn't think I could climb
  • fastest T2 ever
  • beautiful run course

So, sorry if I was negative yesterday. I really thought this race would go down differently for me than it did, but it is what it is.

Modie - I'm sorry to hear you also had a tough race.

mixie - I hope we get to race together again soon! Great job!

Hector - I wish I had been in a better mood when we were talking. I was having a tough time. I'm glad you found me and introduced yourself. I proud of you for having a great race and becoming a triathlete! Woo hoo!

Hey guys, I'm sorry if the race didn't go so hot for some of you but it was great reading about how committed you are. You guys completed the race even with injuries and cramping, were I might have called it quits. You guys Rock!

Did they ever post the full results there on site? By the time I left, they had only posted the top 10 or so from each AG. Kinda sucks that it takes so long for them to post the results. Maybe I'm just Mr. Impatient.

That was one thing that was nice about Hermosa Beach. They were constantly printing new results sheets and had them posted there for everyone to see before they left. Then they had them up on the website late that night (if I remember correctly).

Awesome find! Thanks!!!

I pulled down the AG results and cleaned them up in Excel. I'll attach the file to this post, in case anyone else wants to mess around with the results more.

One thing I noticed is that the posted MPH on the bike and the run mile splits are way off. The run was 4.68 miles long, but they are dividing the time by 4. So no doubt, the swim is wrong also, though I have no idea what the real distance was. Sucks there's no transition times either.

Glad to see I did beat my swim goal with a 19:11, but damn... I need to hit the bike more. My casual T1 time probably cost me 3 positions too. Oh well... Live and learn.

Anyone doing the Hemet Tinsel Tri next month (12/9)? Looks to be a rather "easy" one. Its backwards with a 5K run, 12 mile bike, then only a 150M swim in a heated pool.

EDIT: Had to upload as a CSV, as I guess the site has a 100KB file attachment limit.
