The Tri Cal site says it's still not decided, but the news just announced that it was canceled outright.

I'm sorry to all the athletes who were looking forward to that race. If you're in the area and want to do a ride, come on up to Sonoma County.

I'm not relying on the news on this one, but the swim is almost definitely canceled. Basically, the San Francisco mayor announced this morning during a press conference that the triathlon was canceled. Later in the day, the publicity person for the triathlon told reporters that it is *not* canceled, but that the swim portion is uncertain; the TriCal website says the same. I'm guessing the TV news based its report on the mayor's announcement.

(FYI, I'm a Bay Area newspaper reporter, and all my info is coming from colleagues who are reporting on the spill.)

Either way, it sucks a lot. This was supposed to be my first triathlon and I've been training for months.

You're probably correct to not rely completely on the news.  I haven't been able to find the link online.

I CAN say that there's no way I'd swim in that water this weekend.  Heck, I wouldn't swim in that water even when it's "clean".

I'm truly sorry that it's affecting your race.  Maybe they'll keep the ride/run and make it a kind of du?

So now it's a biathlon event.

"Due to the recent 58,000-gallon oil spill into the San Francisco Bay, Tri-California
Events, the United States Coast Guard, and city officials have determined that the water conditions
off Treasure Island make it unsafe to proceed with the swim leg of the San Francisco Triathlon.

Despite canceling the swim, the event will continue with the bike, and run portion held on
Treasure Island."
