Pre-race routine:

Woke at 0445 to start to hydrate and "get things moving." While waiting to move, I went through some of my mp3's, bouncing around to the ones that had a good beat. Trying to get one stuck in my head for the run.
Event warmup:

At 0535, I linked up with P and we did a moderate run up to the starting point. It's about .75 miles and was a great way to wake up the muscles. Much better than biking. Did some rotataional stretches before the National Anthem, Invocation, and start.

Comments:

With 700 people all crammed at the start line, some of which needed to be in the back, the first 200m were pretty crazy. But, by the time we left the track and headed for the streets, things thinned out.

The first mile or so, I was just picking my way through the people who had started too fast. I was probably running about 6:30-6:45. By about 1.25, our groups had settled out, except for the few unfortunate souls who had been way behind. I just tried to hold what I had, which was 6:45-7:15, I'm guessing.

At mile 2, there's a water stop and a switchback, all of which sabotaged my body into remembering how to run slow. Plus, I could tell that I had spent too much time anaerobic and was starting to feel it. So, my third mile was probably 7:30-7:45, which is a total guess.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really. My goal is to shift to 10k's, which aren't as anaerobic as 5k. If I were going to be a 5k specialist, I would do more extended speed work, but I'm going to keep on track for my plan and just treat these 5k's as alternate speed workouts or tempo runs. Overall, I was pretty happy with the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Found P at the finish, grabbed some Gatorade and a banana. Stood around talking with some folks from the race and congratulating everyone on a great race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My training focus is for a longer race. Also, I'm still in the 240's. If I were even 5 pounds lighter, I could go so much faster. Hopefully I'll remember this when I head to lunch at the DFAC today.
