Pre-race routine:

If you asked me last weekend if I'd be running a marathon the following weekend, I've told you hells no!! Well things change and I find myself in Richmond looking like a Caddyshack cast member.

I arrived a little outside of Richmond around 1am Saturday morning and slept in an abandoned house...They weren't home but I know the people so it’s not like I was on the streets.
Event warmup:

Race morning I wake up at 515am, let their dogs out, get my Carbo-Pro bottle ready and put on my 100% Wool pants, Short Sleeve Polo, Sweater vest, grabbed my 7-iron and got in the car and got to the race around 630am just having finished my 675cals of Carbo-Pro. I park right by the Finish because I knew I'd be hurting and wouldn't want to go far. Head over to the steps and meet up with everyone.

Comments:

I go hang out with the 4:15 group knowing it won't last. Gun goes off and I start to running. Breakdown of Nutrition went like this

GU’s (which I carried in my pants pockets): 4, 8, 12, 14, 18, and 22

Bathroom: 2, 6, 10, 14, 22

Beer: 6oz at 17.5, 6oz at 22

Junk Food: Gummy Bears at 16 that I carried for a while and would just let sit in my mouth, and cola at 16/22.

H20/Power-aid: Every stop. When I did RNR Half in 05 I blew up at mile 11 because I didn't drink enough so I made sure that didn't happen this time.

The run was good times and it was fun having the crowds yell such things like... "Go Runners, Go Runners, Go...Golfers?" "Tiger Tiger Woods Y'all!" "Just playing though?" "When's your T-time?" "Are you under or over par?" As well as just chatting it up with the other runners, I heard some pretty awesome stories when I fell back into the 445-5hour groups because bathroom breaks would take at least 2 mins because of the line. There was this one guy, had to be over 50 and was a Marathon Maniac and Richmond was his 83rd marathon...THIS YEAR!!!! Total stud, but I beat him.

I went out easy because I didn't know how I'd feel in the later miles, considering my longest run this calendar year is like maybe 12 miles. I hit halfway at 2:26:04 and though, alright if I keep this at least I won't go over 5 hours but if I'm feeling good lets shoot for 4:45. My legs never really start to hurt badly till mile 20, front of the quads, but even then it wasn't slowing me down.

I started to really focus on 4:45 around mile 17.5 right after my beer stop. There were 5 dudes chillin on the porch of a bar and cheer, I asked if they had beer (as I had asked everyone, but to no avail) and they did!! So I ran across the street and they had 3 cups with about 2oz of beer in each. I put down the first, tasted good so I finished the other 2 cups and ran off to them chanting "Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods" Seriously the beer helped me out, I felt better and picked up the pace. Hit mile 20 and had around an hour to top off a 10K. I'll keep it around 10min miles if I can then kick it up the last few. Mile 22 brought the Hashers, FINALLY!!, they were also handing out 2oz cups of beer so I poured 3 into one and drank it during my pee break. WOO!! Feeling good. Head into the park and start picking off people left and right. Mile 24, alright I've got 20mins to take out 2.2 miles...better get going!

The last 2.2 miles were about just gritting the teeth and knowing what I had to do. Forgot about the HR and just kicked it. I was flying by people now as I had a mission; better not get in my way iPod-ers because I'm carrying a 7-iron. The last water stop and ran through and grabbed the PowerAde without breaking stride. Mile 26 I ran in 8:15 and the last .2 in 1:28 crossing the line to "Here comes Tiger Woods Ladies and Gentlemen!!" and finished in 4:45:41, my watch time. 2:15:37 was my second half...pretty shweet negative split.

Overall I had a BLAST!!! The course I thought was challenging but then again anything would have been in my case. I met a lot of cool people on the course and we'd cheer each other on as we'd pass back and forth.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more beer
Post race
Warm down:

Got my medal, a slice of cheese, then headed to my car for some Clif Shot recovery. Then met up with Dave later for a bit. Walked around and chatted with some people who saw me on the course and said my costume was awesome and there 4 ladies who were really worried about my nipples.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

ahhh perhaps the fact that my longest run this calendar year has only been 10 or so miles?

Event comments:

High Five!
