Subject: Hawaii Bound....
After watching a friend compete in the 1/2 IM in Kona last year and probably having one too many at the Kona Brewery I made the rash decision to complete the Kona 1/2 IM as a 40th birthday goal (that will be in 2007).
I just starting running last year- it took weeks to make it around the block without thinking that I would have a cardiac arrest. (I work as a research nurse for a cardiology group so I felt I would get good care if necessary). I have no althletic background, but I kept going and did my first 10K in early May. In June I started cycling. My husband took pity on me and bought me a decent road bike in July. This was a great help although I still need to get some muscles in my legs. We are lucky to have some beautiful places to ride just outside our front door. AS for the swimming, I enrolled in a course at the local Junior College this year- it has to help. Right?
I did 2 sprints (that always makes me laugh) last year. In December- after some red wine (a hazzard of living in Sonoma county) I signed up for the Ice Breaker Tri ( another sprint) this April. April seemed so far away in December...
I got my wetsuit last week- the bib style with a seperate top. If I can learn to get out of the wetsuit, I'll be able to let you all know how it goes.

welcome and congrats on the accomplishments so far. Excellent job. I'm originally from Sacto, and I agree you've got a great location to train. Good luck on your goals, I know you'll do great.

great goal! i bike up your way all the time and you are a lucky woman for such a great venue!!

as to the community college swim course, i swear by it. so cheap and so helpful--even if only for knowing you GOTTA go every few days and you have access to a great pool. i basically didn't know how to swim (mechanics, i mean. i had my own quirky way of getting from one place to the next. think dog paddle plus freestyle plus breaststroke all at once) when i joined up for a class. was able to my first tri within months. my swim wasn't great, but i got the job done!!

welcome,
dana

Kim,

That is too cool!!! Just replied to your PM...great to have another Sonoma County resident on the boards.

Glad to know I"m not the only one popped off with a challenge in front of other people after having one too many...that's what got me into this mess as well. My goal after Ice Breaker is the Tri For Real in June (on my 35th birthday...the challenge I spoke of earlier) and if things go well, am planning on the vineman in August which is in our neck of the woods (probably do Barb's Race.)

Let me know if you're every up for a group train. I got a couple other girlfriends who have decided to take on the Ice Breaker in April and it should be fun. At the rate we're going we may be able to provide a pretty extensive race report for this site after the race.

Welcome to the site.  For a beginner, you sound like you have yourself pretty squared away.  Best of luck in achieving your goals.

Welcome Kim, what a fantastic goal that is! Certainly it's the most plausible reason to go to hawaii that I've heard. How is the swim class run? A lot of people here (me too) are using the Total Immersion book on swimming, so i'D love to hear from someone doing something different. Best of luck to you, and I hope to see you listed in the 1/2IM come 2007!
