Looks like we have a great group going!! I am glad to be part of it.

I have a question about A, B & C races. Here in Colorado the big races (at least according to moi) is the 5430 series. The series consists of a Sprint in June, an Oly in July, and a HIM in August. Standings are per race and for the series as well. The Series is my A-event, but how do I rate each of the races? I will be doing the HIM plan but specially from a tapering point of view I want to have a good plan. And then there is the speed training.

What are your suggestions?

Thanks,

Bert

I'll definitely set some goals up...now if I can just figure out how to do that

Another quick question. My races are going to be similar to Bert's, in that I want to race at least one sprint, one olympic, and one HIM this year. The plan that I'm currently going through is the Olympic 20 week plan (RPE based). Many of the run workouts, have built-in speed workouts, distance runs, and recovery runs. For someone that's not a great runner, should I replace my speed workout with a distance run. I'm one of those guys that's never going to get any hardware, and am just looking to finish the HIM really, in a respectable time of course!

Bert,
What I would do for the series is make the 1/2 iron my "A" race and the other two races "B" races. While training for the 1/2 your mileage in the 3 sports will be way up as compared to what you would be doing for the sprint and the olympic. I am going to look at the sched a little more closely but just to give an idea would be..NO taper for the sprint. You dont need it. You will be fine, esp if this is the first race of the season, just get the feel of racing back and work on your transitions. Transitions are FREE time, be fast be effecient and know what you are doing. For the Olympic I would taper 1 week, but I would only change a few things. Since your main race is a 1/2, try to get the long run in early that week so it does not effect your race. Swim one speed session and work on race pace, and one short swim the day before. Get a speed run in where you do tempo work, And get a speed session on the bike.

With the 1/2 being a month later you will already have done all your big miles, and will probably be doing tempo and interval sessions on a regular basis. Cut back a bit the week of the Olympic and then try to get back into it right after. You will probably have a bout 1-2 weeks left before you start your actual taper for the 1/2.

Hey Paul,
You dont want to replace every speed session. I know what you mean though, why do speed when its the endurance that you need. The problem is that 2 long runs per week may be a lot on your body. Its not a bad idea to just stay a little slower but doing tempo work is never a bad thing. If you train at 10 mins per mile, your race will be 10 mins / mile or slower. Just getting some tempo work can change this and pretty dramatically. Your body knows it can do it and with your adrenaline and everything you will be faster on race day.

Take your time with your plan. Go slower for the beg bc I know there are speed sessions in the first few weeks. Wait until about 1/2 way through before you start. SO as for now replace them with an easy jog. Build the engine and then incorporate the speed.

If your "A" race is going to be a 1/2 why are you using an Oly plan??

Thanks Mat. I chose the Olympic plan because the half I wanted to race wasn't until September. Most of the plans were 20 weeks, or 84 days of training. I figured I could complete the OLY plan as a base builder, then jump into the HIM plan. The oly race was in June, so either way it looks like I'll be finishing up a plan way earlier than my race will start.

I hope I don't peak too early

That is plenty of time to peak twice. You may want to restart the 20wk OLY plan when you are 20 wks out and then choose another one for the HIM. What are the dates of the races.

My race calendar for 2008 will look like this:

4/13/2008 - Playtri Olympic
5/4/2008 - Tri-Benbrook (Sprint)
6/7/2008 - Metroplex Sprint (Sprint)
9/7/2008 - Prairieman Half Iron (HIM)
10/5/2008 - Toyota US Open (Olympic)

I never thought about resetting my training plan when I'm 20 weeks out...that's a great idea!

Matt

I updated my short and long term goals including my races.  Things may shift depending on how my swimming progresses and my first Sprint goes in July.

My biggest push right now is training for Boston.  I have a coach so am all squared away on a plan to achieve that goal.  As I get more into the plan, biking will end up taking a backseat.  Given I am able to get in only two work outs per week, I have been doing 2 longer aerobic sessions. Does this make the most sense to you? or should I be considering one interval day and one long day?

My running schedule consists of about 55-60mpw right now, 1 Tempo, 1 16-20m long run and the rest 10-12m easy days. This will creep to around 70-75mpw and 6 days of running as the training progresses.

Hey Suzy,
I dont think you need to do intervals on the bike. Just ride to switch it up. Tackle Boston first, and then we will start worrying about intervals on the bike. Putting that much running in will make your engine huge and you will fly through your tris. Use the bike as a stress reliever from the sets and times and distances. Spinn to keep your legs fresh and ride based on what your body says, it could be like active recovery for your next run.

Thanks Matt.

I know the least about how to become a better biker so all advice is appreciated.  The knee issues I have been having stem from biking, not running so I am aware that pushing too hard is not the best idea.  Last year I averaged 17.6mph in my duathlon (with a fab 29mph headwinds for the first 16m), but my goal is to get closer to 20mph this year.

I realized I am only 100m away from 2000m on the bike this year so am hoping to nail it before 1/1/08.

Hey guys, Im not going to be able to check this as much over the next few days with work and Christmas and stuff.

We all have different goals with training and weight loss and whatever else, but remeber over the next few days, DO NOT gorge yourself just bc its there. Obviosly enjoy x-mas or whatever holiday you are celebrating but you dont have to eat an entire pie by yourself.

Try to get short workouts in if you dont have the time to get your regular workout in. A 10-15 min run is better than no run at all. (I need to listen to my own advice sometimes)

Have fun, and if I dont get a chance to talk to you personally
Have a HAPPY and HEALTHY HOLIDAY

Happy Holidays and a flying New year to all.

I have been messing with my training plans, overlaying the 20 week marathon plan (end date 5/18) over the run portion of the winter maintenance and HIM plans. I presume that will work as long as I keep an eye specifically on the Sunday load where I had the long ride and probably now also added a serious run. Tips?

Merry Christmas!

We are in the midst of a winter storm in WI so I hope Santa finds our house.  Otherwise, I will have to eat the cookies I left him (and that won't be good given Matt's advice!).

Safe travels and happy training this weekend.

I hope everybody had a great Christmas, for those of you that were celebrating. Ill be checking in on all of your logs over the next day or so so try to get them up to date.

As for me, its time for a long sleep, work over the past few days kicked my butt. The city was packed with people especially Central Park. Now hopefully everything will quiet down a bit... at least until New Years Eve. Time to get some good/easy base work in.

Training is going pretty well, although I am having some inner shin/calf issues on the left side.  I have one Tempo and swim left tomorrow before heading to our house in Northern WI where there is at least 15" of white stuff on the ground.  We are taking our x-country skis and I am looking forward to swapping a run to hit the trails.  I am taking my trainer to try to get to that 2000m bike goal, but no swimming until the 1st.  A couple of parties should round out the week.

I am on the count down to vacation in Mexico.  We are leaving on 1/5 for 5 days and that means fun, sun, a major stepback week and few adult beverages .

That sounds awesome. Throwing a little X-C Skiing in will probably be good for your shin, it will relieve some of the pounding that you give it.

Hi Matt, life is good in Colorado. About 8 inches of snow on Xmas day in Denver and more to come tomorrow. I bought some yaktrax and they are getting great use now. Quick insider lesson I learned the hard way today, do not accidently kick your on ankle with the trax..AUCH. I am getting better and better on the rollers I recently bought, riding them in the aerobars is still a big challenge though.

I am 90+% over my flu and it is great to be running out there under the blue skies and in the snow. Soon I will be ski bumming

OK, I have a question, about the bike. It is all VERY new to me, and I am just barely trying to learn to ride really! I have a bike that is a 'hybrid', a cross between a road and mountain bike. I used it for my first (& only) club tri. I know it's not ideal, but as I said, I'm really new to biking, so just trying to stay on! A girl from the club gave me her old road bike (how nice is that!!!) and I'm stoked! But I am scared on it! It has the low handlebars & the brakes on the ends. I honestly do feel really scared to ride it. Should I just bite the bullet & keep riding this bike, as it is a much faster bike, or should I stick to what feels safer at this stage? I am also currently wearing my runners on the bike, with just normal pedals. I am too scared to try cleats. Should I wait a while?

Hi Saundy

I was in your position a few years ago.  I wanted a road bike because it was lighter and faster, but was nervous to use it, especially the drops. I started by riding it around my neighborhood which is reasonably flat to get used to it and as I became more comfortable ventured to paved trails. Within a couple of rides, it was like we had been together forever.  I still am not good at cornering and don't go down hills as fast as others, but it was worth the transition. Now I am pondering aerobars, hmmm?!

As far as clipless pedals go, I would get used to the bike and then introduce the pedals.  I started by having only one clipped in to get used to them and then eventually went to two.  I have one leg I clip out for stops signs, etc.  That way I always know to go down on the left side. Of course, I have had spills, but none in '07! They really do improve your riding and are definitely worth introducing when you are comfortable.

Now strap on that helmet and go!

Suzy

Hey Matt

I saw your post regarding aerobars for a road bike.  I am thinking of having my bike guy install some for me to practice on this winter. Do you have to adjust the bike set up quite a bit to accomodate the different position?  I would like to be able to use both my road bike set up (e.g. hoods) and the aerobars.  Is that possible? what different muscle groups get worked more in this position?

I have heard a general rule for working out when not feeling the best is that if it is above the neck it is ok to work out at a lower intesity? How do you guys deal with working out when under the weather?

I have found that while working out consistently and taking Airborne and vitamins at the first sign of anything, I have been able to fight off getting sick for a long time. And at times I am touching nasty, dirty, disease infested scum of the city.

But on the flip side when I do get sick I usually take it easy with my pacing, and then maybe take off a day or two. That is for in season, during the off season I will usually bag a few more days as rest days bc its harder to kill a cold in the dead of winter.

What do you guys do when you are feeling sick??

I certainly adhere to the above the neck and below the neck training rule. Having said that, most of my issues are sinus related. For light colds I often find that a good sweat followed by a good night of sleep is the best cure anyhow. I typically shift my workouts around a bit, avoiding running and lifting, favoring biking and swimming (followed by the steamroom).
If I feel too crappy, I huddle in bed with an SF book and drop the workouts.
