So much for my plan to be in great shape by spring. I've just been sent to Baghdad for a five week tour (I'm a reporter) so swimming...biking...and running are out of the question. For security reasons...most of my time is spent in the hotel...so any great
tri-training tips for people stuck indoors would be welcome. I'm on the 8th floor...so I can run the stairs. There's also a free weight
set on the balcony...which isn't too bad if you don't mind listening to gunfire in between sets. Beyond all that...Baghdad is lovely this time of year.

hmm any chance to ship a bike and a trainer?? you could even ship your very worst bike--perhaps even buy one there. trainers are pretty portable. you could easily check one in on an airplane i think. could work out well.

as to swimming--you are screwed!

stay safe,

Okay, I think I stopped reading your post at "if you don't mind gunfire...."
ack.
I'll quit bitching about being stuck in the gym now.
Stay safe, have a good trip over there and best of luck training.....
the stairs are a good idea....may sound stupid, but workout tapes maybe???just to keep cardio going? tae-bo?
And then yeah, weights....

Don,
DAANNNG, survival will be paramount. You could take your goggles and blow bubbles in the sink or tub after running the stairs ;-) ?? Good training and fortune to you! Where could I see/read any of your pieces? Thanks,
Vanessa

Thanks for the support!

I'm a correspondent for NBC News, so you'll see me on NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, and on The Today Show. I forgot to mention I borrowed my wife's "Kathy Smith Kickboxing" workout DVD, so I can do some cardio in my room. Also, my heartrate pretty much gets into the target zone every time we venture out onto the streets of Baghdad...I wonder if that counts?

Thanks again,

Don Teague

I wish you much luck. Why don't you bring a jump rope. That way you can at least keep up your heart rate. Also, if you don't have one get a heart rate monitor. This way you can be sure you are in your fat burning zone, or aerobic zone. I imagine your heart rate will be up a bit when you hear the gun fire. I don't think I'll ever complain again about my training conditions. Good luck again and if you can keep in touch.
Evelyn ;-)
