purpleswimmer - 2007-12-31 10:32 PM I would like to join your group, if you'll let me. I am new to do a Triathalon. Last year I started swimming again with a Master's Team. I swam thru college (division 3). Was never great but I always did Ok. Then I stopped swimming and for the most part exercising. Anyways this summer I joined the master's team. I'm doing good with the swimming and have a good start. I swim about 3,000 yards maybe twice a week. About 75% of the swimmers are Triathlete's. My comment has been "yeah I'm a triathlete, I try to get to practice"..... But my lane mates want me to do one. I have signed up for a class at the club that meets once a week to learn how to start training. Anyways I've decided I'm gonna do it. I think I'll need all the help I can get. I read the book SLOW, FAT TRIATHLETE and figure if she could do it so could I. I'm female, 35 and I have 2 kids, ages 7 and 5. and am a mere 235 pounds and about 5'5.

Great, welcome aboard.

Okay folks, here's the first group project.  If you have not set up your training log, then take some time and do so.  It is important for all of us that you use your training log daily so that we can all check on your progress.  Plus, it makes us each accountable.  There have been many a day when I really didn't want to train but the thought of an empty training log and having to explain it to my friends pushed me out the door.

Second, what training plan are you following?  If you are new I highly suggest one of the beginner sprint programs from BT.  Post what you're doing and where you are at.  If you're just starting a program, pick one and get rolling and let us know.

As for me, I am doing the silver Half Iron program for 20 weeks and will then do the "half to full" bridge program in May.  Because of my schedule I have modified the half program to fit my needs.  It asks for 9-11 sessions per week but I can only do 6-8 so have changed it accordingly.  Feel free to do the same with yours.  Remember, there is really no right or wrong way, only your way.  If you're way off base with your plan, I will certainly let you know or give you my opinion.

Happy new year!!!  Now get training!

I'll pass on the training log. There is just way too much extraneous stuff to wade through. I maintain my log on http://www.breakingthetape.com/and can post and be done in less than two minutes. I can't even get to the logs inside of two minutes let alone post.

Set up your training log - done! I have actually been using my training log since June and can vouch for its accountability. Without the daily inspirations from my last mentor group, I know it would have been easy to fall off track so many times when I first got started.

What training plan are you following? I following the Bronze Beginner to 1/2 IM plan. My first race is actually an Oly, but comparing the silver and bronze Oly plans to this plan, as far as time, the minutes were not that much different, but the plan I am using has lots of info and focused workouts as well as phases. I like all that extra stuff! If I feel good at the end of this plan and after my first Oly, I might (might!) consider doing the Half Redman in September.

It's going to be kinda tough for myself and the group to monitor your progress if you are using a different site for your workouts etc..  I think the idea of a mentoring group on BT is to acutally use the BT site for your training and such.  Otherwise, I don't think there's much you can get from a mentoring group.

Let us know.

Hey Bill, or Mr. Big Sexy...tee hee!

Just want to say HI to the rest of the team...what are we, 12 deep now with big, bold, goal-oriented ahtletes?  That's awesome.  Good luck keeping up on our BT-blogs!

I'm logging nutrition for the day and continuing to log my workouts here.  My plan is my own 4-weeks till first marathon, so taper is coming soon.  Then in Feb, it'll be a swim focused tri-balanced plan.  Haven't selected the one yet, but hopefully there is one here at my Bronze-is-Beautiful level.

Cheers, -Sunny

P.S.  My mantra:  fuel the workout, not the sitting

I'd love to join. I know I'm going to need some accountability to reach my goal of completing a sprint triathlon this year. My husband is thinking about joining me in this endeavor, but he's still not sure yet. A little background on me, I'm a 24 year old elementary school teacher and have been married for almost two years. I'm from Florida, currently in SC and hoping to soon make a move to South FL. We have two fur-babies and hopefully will try for our first baby this year, but first I want to complete my triathlon goal. My husband was an avid mountain biker throughout high school and still loves it, so luckily I have some help with the biking part of the goal, but swimming and running will be a challenge. I would not call myself athletic, but I would like to be able to by this time next year. As for races, right now I'm looking into the Danskin sprint triathlon at Disney in May and that same weekend is the muddy buddy race at Disney. So the goal is to be ready by May with biking and running and possibly swimming if I do the sprint triathlon. That's a little about me.

I am a "former" tri-newbe ... and have lost all of the endurance that I had at one time ... I started back in 2004 at 270 lbs and worked my way down to 195 lbs. I completed a full marathon and several tri's ... at the end of 2004 i injured my ankle and stopped training ... I have since bounced back up to the 270 weight and to top it off i began to smoke ... Now here I am at the start of 2008 making another comittment to myself to get into shape and feel good about myself again ... I know that I can do this but it would be good to do it with others and be part of a group ... I NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE ... If you want anymore info I would be glad to provide

thanks

Most of you are under way...GREAT!

As for the whole mentoring thing, I thought it necessary to provide you guys with my commitments to you during this mentoring session.  With 10 in our group, it will not be realistic to check up on everyone daily.  I will however commit to at least 2 log reviews per person per week and provide feedback in your "inspire".  As for Q&A, please use this thread or if it's something you'd rather not ask in the public forum, feel free to PM me anytime.

During this first month as the excitment of this new lifestyle kicks in, it will be tempting to want to train over and above what your respective programs require.  I urge you guys to resist the temptation and stay loyal to the 10% rule (only 10% increase in time or distance per week).  This sport is about discipline which at times can mean disciplining yourself to stop when it's time to stop.  Keep the big picture in mind at all times.  This is s progression of endurance, not a sprint to log time as quickly as possible.

Have fun!

The paradox of this sport can be seen in the fact that at times the motivation hits when we complete a workout rather than before we start one.  At least twice a week, if not more, I have no motivation to work out and have to force myself to get it done.  Unfortunately, there's no magic mantra or trick; just have to suck it up and go!  Good luck today.

You will need to set your training log to "public".

So how does everyone feel after the first week of the new year?

I had a pretty good week getting back into it again. I missed one bike and 2 swim workouts from my plan, but not a bad week at all for getting back into the groove.
