  • Comments: For my first HIM, I felt pretty defeated. My hubs had a good race and made a new PR. I spent 2 hours in the med tent trying to get my coughing under control. Finally started feeling better and got to watch my hubs race for a bit. Met the swim director who told me point blank he was glad I pulled because hes seen others get seriously hurt later on trying to race through something like that. He was still concerned about me and tracked me down later in the day to make sure I wasnt still coughing and could breath. All in all this first attempt at a HIM was defeating to say the least. I am hoping to re-attempt at the Longhorn in my hometown in October. I will def be spending a lot of time in the pool to make myself feel more prepared.

  • Comments: MDOT RDs need to realize that they have to make accomodations for pre race warm ups and attmpt to simplify race logistics. Having 2 transitions does not help.

  • Comments: I left the race with a better opinion than when I arrived. I would do it again with an RV at the campground. That would be enjoyable. The crowds were great.

  • Comments: The whole weekend was a blast. I really couldn't ask for more. I loved camping and hanging with the big BT crew. A new PR was just icing on the cake. The race was well run and I liked the course. I would totally do it again, only next time get better directions.

  • Comments: Sitting here four days post race I feel better about the race than I did on Sunday. I see that under training reared it's ugly head. I was really bummed out by my run on Sunday. I thought I could have done much better. I sit here ready to rededicate myself to training. I am needing to really focus on training and make it more of a priority. I also need to lose some much needed weight. Would love to be down 20-30 pounds by this time next year. I really want to thank my family, friends and all here who have supported me. It was a great adventure I have taken from complete couch potatoe to finishing a half ironman. I now look forward to becoming a competitor instead of just a participant.

  • Comments: Great race, just wish it were closer than 12 hours away. Great times camping with DickDime, Freckle Face, DrewB8, jazz####, MissKelly, Lisac957, her friend Eric, Doug, pseudoyams and his wife, and the 3 dogs. This was one of the best weekends I can remember, ever.

  • Comments: A really good buddy of mine (Linford) sent me a text message prior to the race. It basically said "Your body knows what to do, now get your head out of it's way". Very good advise from a great friend! This course was awesome and I'm super psyched to be going to the World Championships at Clearwater.

  • Comments: Overall was a good race. Plenty of aid stations and great volunteers. Course was very clearly markd and well done. Two transistion areas was an extra challenge, but was done fairly well. Needed more rack space in the first transition area, I thought the second had enough if bikes were racked the right way.

  • Comments: As far as how the race was ran I thought it was ran very well. The whole two separate transitions were confusing at first, but was fine in the end. Everything was on time. Lots of volunteers to help out and the aid stations were placed as marked. The bike course was really nice. Nice country riding. It was fun to run through the campgrounds as well. If I wanted to drive 10.5 hours to a race again I'd probably make the trip back.

  • Comments: They really put on a terrific race! Everything was super organized, on time, and really exciting. The crowds on the run course were really unlike anything else I've experienced at a tri, because there were people throughout the entire course. The bike course is a lot of fun, and although it's hilly, it was perfect for me. Our group had an awesome time camping- there were 10 people and 3 dogs- a perfect weekend!

  • Comments: Great race. Lots of support. Spectator friendly. I loved all the hoopla on the run course. It's just what I needed to keep me going. Our good friends from Springfield had never been to a tri so it was fun introducing them to this craziness. This was my second HIM distance race. Both times I had moments where I swore I was a complete lunatic to be doing this at my age but when they put that medal around my neck ... it was oh so sweet!

  • Comments: I only have two complaints. 1.The transition areas were too cramped, especially the entrance to the bike finish. I think that was unsafe and the cause of multiple acciddents. 2. It made it too crowded to start the M35-39 and M30-34 AG's at the end. Since these are generally two of the fastest AG's. I think it was less safe to do it this way. More passing in the water and on the bike means more potential for problems.

  • Comments: The orgainization in teh days and weeks leading up to the race weekend was rather poor. However, once the race weekend was upon us, it was quite good and overall I would recommend this race to others. You just need to constantly be checking the race web site as well as beginner triathlete for event details.

  • Comments: great race, the volunteers were amazing, but the real saving grace was the crowd, the people yelling for me on the run was amazing, just being able to go through the campground and seeing all the people, and then all the people along the road and finish was just amazing. The mass of people really pushes you not to give up, it was much easier to walk down by T1 when i was alone with the trees and the other racers suffering than through the campground with the people calling my number

  • Comments: The end of the race is where it gets interesting. I went and put stuff in car and was slowly walking back when I spotted a guy on a 4 wheeler and did the thumb up for a hitch hike. he said yeah sure no prob. It turns out it was Lawrence Legend RED DOG ( a man that puts on a free work out 4 days a week 2x a day for the Lawrence community and has been for 25+ years) people walking to their cars were yelling HEY RED DOG. then I talked with him about going to school at KU for my masters. etc. I went to the awards ceremony and sat on the ground waiting for them to get to the Clydesdale division. while I was waiting they went threw the AG awards and the role down for Clearwater. M25-29... the winner was at 4:16:27 and i figured that being 36th that it wouldn't even come close to me. little did i know that there were NO people my age hanging out for a spot. the 7th and 8th place guys took the first 2 spots and then he started naming names... 9th, 10, 15th 20th "is there any Men 25-29 here

  • Comments: A family situation popped up and I wasn't able to race. Thanks to everyone who offered encouragement before and has asked about my results after. Apologies to my training partners who helped me get ready. I was in the best shape of my life for Ironman Kansas 2009, I'll make sure your help doesn't go to waste by continuing to improve for Ironman Kansas 2010.

  • Comments: What a great race! The two transitons threw me off a little, but nothing you can't deal with. It was really well run, with tons of volunteers, crowd support, and a plethora of aid stations especially on the run. The finish line was unbelievable, and I can't WAIT to come back next year!
