  • Comments: This year was better than years past. More food at the finish line (the malasadas were a big hit), and it seemed that there were a lot more porta-pottys and stuff on the course. The race is still pretty heavily geared towards the Japanese visitors. So much so that I couldn't even figure out how to buy the Adidas stuff at the expo. Since Nike left as a sponsor, the merchandise has been pretty junk. Compared to major urban marathons with similar entry fees, the expo is pretty junk, too. People have been making the same complaints for years, but the organizers don't really seem to care. All in all, though, it's a really fun race, and the crowd support was great this year. As always, the volunteers were top notch, too.

  • Comments: The event is well run, but I really think that a major marathon in a tropical climate should have more aid stations. I was also kind of bummed that they didn't have any Gatorade at all until almost six miles into the run this year.

  • Comments: Volunteers and police officers were simply awesome. I can't thank them enough. I would have DNF and took an ambulance ride if they had not bent over backwards to get me back going. I told them I was done (and I was at that point)...and they nicely offered to do anything and everything to get me feeling better.

  • Comments: I went into my first open marathon expecting to do better than I did at Couer d'Alene. Although I finished with a faster time, I don't feel like I was better at all. When I finished Couer d'Alene, I felt good. I wasn't at all very sore or particularly fatigued as I crossed the line. In this marathon my feet were aching terribly and my legs just felt leaden.

  • Comments: Well run race...but honestly, I was expecting more. This is one of the top 10 marathons in the world as far as # of runners. There was lots of volunteers, but I would have thought you'd get more after you finish. I knew it was just gatorade and water during the race...so cookies and apples after was a little lame. The medal didn't even come with a ribbon and the shirt is so bright I'll never wear it. Oh well...I didn't run it for the stuff I would get...just sayin...

  • Comments: I read lots of negative comments on the Honolulu Marathon. I don't think they are warranted. Overall I felt it was well organized, well executed, and pretty fun. For the sheer size of this event, they do a pretty good job and I'd do it again. Pretty amazing to run through Waikiki streets and NO CARS.

  • Comments: I run this race every year because I'm a local. If I wasn't, I might do it once for the "destination" aspect. The course is tough due to heat and some hills that seem to come up just at the wrong times. Plan on losing at least two to three minutes at the start due to the crowds.

  • Comments: There was a problem with the timing chips. My chip time was reported in the official results as the same as the clock time, which is impossible. Also, I was ahead of the 4:00 pacer. My own stopwatch gave me a result of 3:57:53, while the clock time was 4:02

  • Comments: Kapiolani Park was a giant mud bog due to the heavy rains. Many poor stagers at the beginning of the race. I spent the first 3 miles dodgin around walkers who had staged themselves in the 2-3 and 3-4 hr staging areas. Was very frustrating. This was my last marathon. I will stick to the shorter races such as tris and 10Ks and the Great Aloha Run (8.15 miles)

  • Comments: This is a very fun race. The Aloha spirit is very visible everywhere. People were having fun on this race. All through the middle section of the race through Hawaii Kai, people were standing in their driveways with bowls of candy or trail mix or other snacks. The volunteer were AWESOME! This is a great first marathon for anyone. I think if you can't finish this one, you haven't made any effort to train physically or mentally at all. The last guy to finish did it in 15:40:08 and there were still volunteers at the finish waiting for him!

  • Comments: Even though I didn't hit my goal time, I was very pleased with the race. I felt my body and spirit felt plenty good enough to hit the 3:10, but my cramping just prevented me from doing so. Sara gave me bottles of Endurance Gatorade, which I added extra salt to at mile 11 and 22, drank at water stations throughout the way, but in the end, I think my body just wasn't used to running in 70 something weather and high humidity.
