  • Comments: This was a PR for the CDA course for me, although I went in with certain expectations and goals and since I didn't reach those it felt somewhat like a disappointment. I need to put things in perspective and just learn from this experience.

  • Comments: My goal was a 10:25; 1:15 + 5 + 5:30 + 5 + 3:30. I missed all of the splits except for T2 which was a high estimate. I think the biggest issue (other than setting a time goal in my first IM) was not taking in enough calories on the bike. I should have started eating a bit earlier and eaten more. I think it would have kept my energy level up for the duration of the run. I have heard it said that the 4th discipline in long-distance racing is nutrition and I think I may have found a new weakest leg in the sport. This race is awesome. From the location, to the volunteers, to the organization, to the sheer spectacle of the M-dot experience, it is definitely a top-notch triathlon. It was a blast! Despite the mechanical issue on the bike and struggles on the run, I thoroughly enjoyed the race. It was my first, but definitely not last, Ironman. Even when I was walking, I was smiling and thanking volunteers. I learned a lot about Iron-distance racing and I'm really looking forward to

  • Comments: It's Ironman! Of course they know how to do this! I think it's one of the better-run IM races in the country. I will definitely be back. I love the town, the people, and the course. CdA rocks!

  • Comments: Can't say enough good things about Coeur D'Alene. This city really does make the athletes feel welcome, and they support the race 100%. I could not have picked a better place to do my first 140.6. Worth every penny and more. I'm already signed up for next year. This race was a gigantic learning opportunity and I am absolutely happy with the way things turned out. Lessons learned here will be carried into AZ in Nov, as well as attempt #2 here next year. I LOVE THIS RACE....by far rates as the best race I've done yet.

  • Comments: This was my first Ironman and I'm extremely happy that I chose Coeur d'Alene. All the local spectators and volunteers really make this race. I was just amazed at how welcome they made me feel. Not once did I hear a complaint from the locals although I'm sure there are some that don't like having the race. The next day people were even asking me how I did. I've been a spectator at Kona and you just don't realize how hard an Ironman really is until you've gone through the fire. My hats off to my fellow first-timers and the racers that willingly put themselves through this year after year. I don't know if I'll ever do another Ironman outside of the remotest chance of Kona. If I do, I'll just have to come back to Coeur d'Alene. A beautiful venue, an awesome crowd, and incredible volunteers. Who could ask for more?

  • Comments: Lesson to take home: Simulate race conditions during practice whenever possible. My goal was 11:30:00, but obviously that didn't happen. I was on pace to finish close to that, but I never got the chance to run. I think I could have run a 4 hour marathon, but I just couldn't breathe. I wish things could have been different, but alas... In the end it was an excellent gut check for me and I am so pumped that I completed what I set out to do. This race in incredible and the people of CDA are awesome.

  • Comments: This was an awesome experience and the perfect realization of a 30-year-old (at least!) dream. The kids are ready to go back. The hubby has already said I should book next year's hotel. For now, I will recover, enjoy the summer, and then make my decisions...

  • Comments: WTC races are second to none. Every single athlete is treated like a rock star. The volunteers and spectators are amazing. These things are community events. The atmosphere is amazing. Some are shocked at the price but I firmly believe this is a "you get what you pay for" type of deal. This is not my last Ironman.

  • Comments: Well, I figure after this race I have nowhere to go but up. I am still pretty proud of myself for finishing considering I'm just over a year out from my breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Just glad to be here and be healthy enough to do it. Will definately work on speed and strength training for next year since I'm already signed up!

  • Comments: My team "coach" for the NYC Tri is a multiple IM veteran. He told me that I would learn a lot about myself on the course out there. He was right. What did I learn? I learned that I love my family and prefer to spend time with my family. I missed a handful of training sessions, opting instead to hang out with my boys. I am more grateful for a 15+ hour finishing time and having spent time with boys versus a 13 or 14 hour finishing time and having missed the opportunities to be with them. I learned that I enjoy triathlons, but Ironmans are not for me. I'm sure I'll keep doing some nice local races, but the time involved for a full Ironman, in my opinion, is not worth the cost of spending time with my family.

  • Comments: Coeur d’ Alene Ironman June 2009 2,153 eager triathletes gathered on the shores of Lake Coeur d’ Alene to participate in the 7th running of the Ford Ironman CDA ’09 edition. The road to my 5th Ironman was another very enjoyable ride, and one that I will certainly remember for the rest of my life; just like the other four. It will also put an end to my “once per year” Ironman races I have done since 2005. Much of this Ironman was about me (as usual), but in many ways it was very much about a rising endurance athletic star, Scott Callender. I work with Scott (affectionately known as “Scooter”), and I think it was my bright idea for him to get involved in triathlon in the first place. A constant at each of my Ironman events has been my sweetheart wife, Kim Marie. She has not been feeling so great the last few months, so for her to volunteer her entire day at Ironman and help out, was unbelievable. She is my rock when I race, and Lar Dog needs his rock. My training was

  • Comments: Everything was great. I knew that Ironman was a big deal, but didn't know how big of a deal it really was until you are in the middle of it. I want to thank my family so much for their support. Stacie wanted to kill me because I left her with the kids so much. Without her support I couldn't have done it. Thank you Taylor, Alyssa, and Justin for the great signs you made and had mom bring with her. I also want to thank Stephen Bilby my oldest and best friend for asking me to do this with him. I want to thank my parents for watching the kids so Stacie could come and freeze her butt off waiting to catch me for a second on my many loops thru town. A big thank you to Jackie and Mark for letting us stay at their home and use their car our whole trip. We had a great time with them and their boys. I want to thank Joe, Bonnie, Rick, and all the guys that rode with me while I trained. I want to give a huge thank you to Ed for letting me borrow his wetsuit to start my day. I also want to

  • Comments: Sure, I'll give it a 5 - this was my first Ironman and I had a great experience. It may have been slower than I was hoping for (I wanted under 13 hours), but mentally I did well and hell, I FINISHED!!!! The city of Coeur d'Alene is beautiful and this race is well run. The weather this time was pretty terrible (wind on the bike course, wind and rain on the run), but the volunteers were absolutely fabulous and the people cheering on the side of the road made me smile so many times. I couldn't have asked for a better time :).

  • Comments: I remember my arms being very heavy as I approached the finish line but I managed to get them up high as I crossed. Unfortunately the camera people weren’t very good at timing the shot because my finishing pics look like I’m about ready to hit the deck. A volunteer grabbed me and held me up while I stumbled along. My hamstrings were very tight and my feet were kind of burning. We got to the grass and I wanted to take my shoes off and walk barefoot in the cool damp grass. That’s when I realized I had a nice slice on the inside of my little toe…no idea how I got it but my sock was bloody and there was a large chunk of skin hanging off my toe. Time to go visit medical. I sat down while they cleaned up my toe and I quickly got very cold. By this time it was raining and the temps had dropped to near 50. When I got up to walk away I was too cold to move and started to have uncontrollable convulsive shivers. They decided to take me to the warmer medical tent. I laid down and got a light massage
