  • Comments: Good location, plenty of snacks, shade, and scenery, and a good early season indicator of fitness. This is a great race for beginners in that is is low key. The swim isn't particularly difficult, although I always think it's long, and the water is not deep. The bike is flat as can be, but expect wind. The run, too, is flat, but expect a beat down if the sun decides to join you.

  • Comments: White Lake is a great place to race. Beautiful lake swim and the bike is great. Moving the race back into April was a good idea to beat the heat but it still got hot. Hey but triathlon is an outdoor sport.

  • Comments: This was my first Half Iron distance. I learned tons. My recovery has been good to this point. Very little soreness. Took a walk with my wife around the farm for recovery yesterday. Not sure what to call myself after this race. I'm not a HIM finisher, not 70.3. 71.6 duathlete?

  • Comments: I think this is a great race overall. I just had a little screw-up with the nutrition but you live and learn. The organization was great. The race venue and courses were spectacular. I have never been to this part of the state before so this was a real treat. Finally, if you haven't swam in White Lake it is a great experience. The water is very clear and a large part of the race actually takes place in fairly shallow water. I am thinking seriously about doing the International this fall.

  • Comments: I finished my first HIM. Other than when my arms got really tired towards the end of the bike, I had a lot of fun. Volunteers were all amazing and motivating. I usually like to thank everyone I encounter, but wasn't always in a condition to be able to today. I hear people complain about set-up events, but I've always had a positive experience, and this race was no different. The roads were rough, and might keep me from making this an annual event. The swim was beautiful, so I could see myself bringing the family back sometime... possibly for the sprint. I originally planned on driving home after the event. The family, who had a conflicting engagement that ended up being cancelled, were all able to come down. I ended up sleeping the whole ride home. Yes!!!

  • Comments: This was my first HIM. It was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I learned a ton on preparation and made sure that no matter what, I stayed positive.

  • Comments: All of the volunteers were great. I tried to thank as many as possible, I think most of the racers do, I hope that volunteers understand that at certain points in a race that pain and rudeness can be misinterpreted. Thanks to all involved.

  • Comments: This is a super race for a first timer - and this was my second time participating in this race - - got to swim this year (it was cancelled last year) and absolutely LOVED it. The race is very well organized, lots of great volunteers. Only glitch was the lack of water at mile 18 on the bike, but otherwise water stations on bike and run were great. Especially all the ice on the run - can not tell you how much this is appreciated. Saw the ice truck several times during the run refilling the stations. The heat on the run was brutal and my sister in law saw many people head out and turn back before they even went a mile.

  • Comments: For my first HIM and second tri I thought I did good. I was looking between a 6:15:00 and 6:30:00 so I came within my window. I would like to do another one but I think I'll do a fall race.

  • Comments: Maybe this distance just is not my cup of tea. I had trained consistently for several months, put in the mileage, just did not or could not execute on the run.

  • Comments: This is supposedly an easy, fast, course, and I can see why people say that. But today, it was anything but. The winning time here is normally ~4:00, and several guys go sub 4:20. Not today. Nobody went <4:20. I assume it was the heat and winds on the last part of the bike course -- those are certainly what got me. I'm proud that I didn't overcook the bike -- power numbers were right where they needed to be -- but I'm a little distressed that I wasn't able to put together a better run performance, even in spite of the heat. I've got a lot of work to do before IMWI....

  • Comments: It's a real shame the swim was cancelled, but visibility was pretty awful (and admittedly had me more than a little concerned). This is a GREAT race for a first timer. Low key, beautiful lake (I swam in it the day prior and it is truly lovely, sandy bottom, clear, flat as sheet of glass), run around the lake is fun, lots of cheering from road side. Weather was cooler than expected - if it had been hotter, it would be very different - there is no shade. I had prepared for heat by adding layers of clothing to my training runs and rides (which is why I may have been cold on the bike and glad to have that extra layer). Super Race! Just a note - the shirts are unisex sizing (which I don't remember reading at registration) and I'm a pint size - - so I was swimming in the small that I had ordered. The set up folks were great about letting me exchange for an extra-small after the race.

  • Comments: Ok....Sometimes I think you gain more from the races that don't go as planned. I was so ready for the swim, and would have rocked it. Those that know me, know that that is a huge thing for me. I have come so far from that girl that when tri girls started could not swim at all. I was so ready for the bike and am very happy with my avg. I knew that the run was my strongest part and that I needed to hold on for the bike. I did that. I am a runner. I can run fast(ish). I thought I would break it out of the park with the run. Well, that did not happen, and that is ok. I think several things played into the run not going well, me starting race already hungry, the foot/sock issue. I also think that I needed to have run a little more since the shamrock. While I thought I was way prepared for the swim and bike going into the race. I did not feel that way about the run. I loved all of the support from my family. They made this the best Mother's Day weekend ever! I will do another....to be able

  • Comments: My adductors in both legs seized up on me in an excruciating way last night after the race. So bad I thought I was going to be sick. The Stick saved the day. I was also worried it might happen during my sleep, but it was okay.

  • Comments: That was the best swim course ever. Great bike course. Miserable run course...who runs on a highway? Doing this distance has taught me a lot about myself. I have decided I love this distance and want to do more 1/2's..you get to swim just the right distance, settle in on the bike and push on the run....but doing this is making me re-think my Ironman in CDA in June. I will take a couple of days to decide, but I am unsure today. I am glad, as always, that I had my best friend and my husband out there with me. And I am proud of myself-I wanted to quit 3 times on the run. Doug saw later that 65 people (out of about 600) dropped out of the race. I am glad I wasn't one of them, but I understand why they did. As far as being the hardest thing I have ever done, this ranks right up there with having a baby. :)

  • Comments: Several of the aid stations ran out of water AND ice. It was so hot that I was sticking ice cubes in my suit and they would be completely melted within 5 minutes. I also thought the post race food was odd. No beer tent. Red beans, rice, and pork? No thanks- I'm also not a big fan of pepsi products. For me it was a waste. Other than that I was too tired to go look around at whatever else they hard there.

  • Comments: This was the best I've felt after a 1/2. Not my best time, the bike was slower, but it was my best run here. Still not sure I'm cut out for the longer distances.
