  • Comments: The only reason I gave this race a "4" is because of its stature and venue, but I have to be honest; I've seen better post-race food, drink, and atmosphere at a local sprint costing $60. I'll probably be coming back next year, with the experience from this race, and another season behind me; that sub-6 (and more) will be mine. I was impressed with the quality of the athletes in the field. From top to bottom, everyone I saw was doing well. Not sure of the number of DNF's, but there were few casual racers on a course this tough. Couldn't hang around for the day or the banquet. My wife told me that my dad had called during the race, said my mom was not doing well at all, and we needed to get to Phoenix ASAP. Cleaned up TA, showered at the hotel, packed the truck, and hit the road for Phoenix by 3:30.

  • Comments: This was a good race and I might consider doing it next year. It will depend on where I am in my career at that point. Overall it was a well managed race and I had a great experience doing it.

  • Comments: This is a great event. Lots of support, great volunteers, well organzied. The Awards Banquet is fun. I really liked watching the AG'ers accepting their Kona slots. The female challenged athletes didn't have any entries, so those slots were allocated to other AGs. But, those new slots weren't announced until the awards banquet. Some of these ladies who finished 2nd or 3rd were so surprised when they got Kona slots. Then there was the winner in the 18-24 AG that turned down a Kona slot! The crowd couldn't believe it. I'll be back next year.

  • Comments: The volunteers were great and the race is well organized. We got very lucky with the weather, if it had been normal Lubbock hot and humid weather this race could be a beast. If you're looking for a challenging half to do, this is the race for you.

  • Comments: I really like the course, very challenging. The bike course is awesome. I thought for being an IM 70.3 event the post race would have been better. I like this course even with my run explosion i wanted to run 5:15 at worst case scenario

  • Comments: I love this race. Everyone from the race directors, volunteers, and (most of) the athletes to the people of Lubbock who just have good West Texas hospitality make it worth the 1300+ mile roundtrip drive. I'll be back for a third time in 2008.

  • Comments: They need better post race food. The fruit was nice, but I didn't find any really good substantial food. If they had pizza and that kind of stuff, I didn't see it.

  • Comments: Overall I ended up 74th overall, my highest placing in this race and a run PR of about 6 minutes or about 27 second per mile faster. My AG was stacked - I think last year my time would have put me at 5th - this year I was 21st on a tougher day.

  • Comments: This was my first tri to do ever so I don't have that much to go on. The volunteers were EVERYWHERE. They were fantastic. The Greers REALLY take care of the athletes. There are NO worries at all on race day. Just run the race and everything else is taken care of. This was one of the most exciting days of my life and I cannot wait for the next race. I just quit smoking 8 months ago and started training for this race in February so next year I should be able to kick some ass. haha

  • Comments: Loved this race! All the volunteers were amazing. I will be back! Also had some of the best jock-strappers around. It was awesome to get those cold towels and see our names chalked on the road.

  • Comments: I was the best of times, it was the worst of times... "Pain heals, chicks dig scars, but Glory lasts forever" - The Replacements I put most of my thoughts and experiences from this race in the other sections of this race report so I don't want to rehash them in the final comments. What I can say at this point, is I now know what it takes to be an Ironman. I know that I only did a Half that day, but I also know that I saw the demon of self doubt and reason and I conquered that demon. I also squashed a perfectly new and full water bottle with my back wheel and lived to tell the story.

  • Comments: I'm going to Kona baby! After this race, I've officially validated my entry via the lottery. Oh yeah! :) A huuuuuuuge thanks to Aaron and Haley. Picking me and Jess up at the airport, putting us up for two nights, driving all the way to Lubbock and back, and supplying a non-stop good time. Hanging out and racing together with friends ( some old, some new ) really makes this so much fun. Remember, have you hugged your jockstrap today?

  • Comments: What an awesome day! This was my 5th triathlon, and by far the most challenging. When I signed up for this race I had some vague notion of what it meant for it to be considered one of the toughest 70.3 courses in the world. As race day approached, I was actually thinking I'd bitten off way more than I could chew. My new swimming skills were untested, I'd never biked hills, and I hadn't run that far in 15 years. Other than that, I was totally prepared. Having Joel get my training dialed in gave me as much of a mental edge as anything. I knew if nothing went wrong, I would finish. I didn't think I'd make my time goal, and as it turned out that last hill on the run pushed me over my goal by 1:49. On a race this long, I'll take a "plus or minus 2 minutes". I feel great about the race. I would absolutely do it again, with a more ambitious goal time.

  • Comments: This really is a great race. Everything started right on time, the swim course was very well marked, aid stations and volunteers were everywhere and the course itself, while challenging, is very well laid out. Racers got both a race shirt and a finisher's shirt along with a medal. Again, my only disappointment was the post race food. I can see coming back to this next year.
