  • Comments: Tough to be disappointed with a 25min improvement over my 1st half (Vineman with a knee injury), but I still need to work on my swimming and running. I felt very good running off the bike, so that is a good sign.

  • Comments: My only injury was a bloody knee from finishing on the slip and slide. I also did not re-apply sun screen so i cought the red face of shame for my lack of foresight. I really do look forward to IMAZ now in that the run will be later (cooler) than this and with a good swim and bike I should be able to finish before cut-off times.

  • Comments: I love to do this race, except for ironman this is by far the best organized and well run I have done. The only negative was a tight u-turny course but this seems to be the curse of Tempe races.

  • Comments: Overall this has been an amazing experience getting to the point where I can complete a half ironman race. I was really glad that I put no pressure on myself to reach a time goal, even to the point where I refused to wear a watch. It was a cool feeling being out there and not knowing how long it had been, how fast I was going, or when I was going to be done. I really wouldn't be here without the support and motivation from all the people on BT, it is amazing to be a part of a community that enables people to reach these goals. It has been great training with my wife and an amazing group of people and I am totally looking forward to the next half ironman, or whatever event comes our way.

  • Comments: I thought this was a great race. I missed almost all the pre and post activities but they seemed like they would be fun. I keep going back and forth from dissapointed to happy about my results. I think that I made some major mistakes and sometimes that's the only way to learn. I know that I won't make them again. I also think that after all of the snafu's and with how badly I was feeling, I only missed my goal time by 5 minutes and 47 seconds. Not bad. If I can get my nutrition in order, I think that I can tighten up my run which I think would be me in the 5:45 area which wold be awesome.

  • Comments: This, despite my mental unpreparedness, was a good race. Its supremely well organized, on time, good traffic control, safe, at least a thousand volunteers and almost as many aid stations. In blatant departure to my normal policy of no "potty talk" This race holds the distinction of the most porta potties per race entrant of any race I've seen. There were roughly a bajillion million-million of them (christian rope estimate) which would put the ratio of racers to porta potties at, i dunno, I was told there would be no math on this exam. I set the bar very low with a race goal of 6:45 for this, my first race of this distance and I beat my goal handily. According to my stoic approach, i should be pleased. Instead I'm indifferent. I signed up for too many races that were too close together this year. I trained really hard for Vineman and then threw the rest of the season to the sharks. Nonetheless, my blase attitude should not reflect poorly on this race as it is one of the best

  • Comments: Terrific race, the best organized I've seen. More than enough volunteers and drink stations. Tons of spectator support. Race started a little late due to a traffic accident, but that can't be helped. Post race had tons of food and drink.

  • Comments: They took suggestions from last year and improved the race. Packet pickup was WAY better this year, as there was no lines when I went through (unlike last year which was a complete mess). Everything was much more organized. 3 loops on the bike course still isn't fun (I'd like it better with 2), but I understand if they can't get the permits for the other roads. A few more porta-potties at the aid stations on the bike would be helpful, and again, move those to the center median. Other than that, I have no real complaints. Everything went really well given the size of the event.

  • Comments: Soma Half Ironman Triathlon This was my last triathlon of the year – I had signed up months ago – feeling pretty motivated coming off some summer down time and looking to race well at the end of the season. I did IMFL in 1999, and it was hard it was to train deep into October, and now I remember oh so clearly why that was. After months of swimming, and riding and in great weather, it gets hard to get up and out the door when it’s below 40 or even 50 degrees. I love to run in any weather, the more foul the weather, and the better I probably do actually. But the swim and run – I am much more motivated to train when the weather is better. Anyhow – my mojo was slipping when we hit the beginning of September, at least for the swim and slightly for the bike – I didn’t get much of either in - to say I was in ‘peak’ condition would be misleading so I like to use the term “very rested”. I had plenty of fitness from earlier in the season and I have been running quite a bit and I was hoping I could

  • Comments: The course is flat and fun, just a little bit boring. It would've been better to make the loops longer and only have 2. Aid stations were great, organization and information was great and the entire atmosphere of the race was really upbeat and exciting.

  • Comments: The race was great. The bike course, while the same from last year, had a lot more room on it since some of the streets that were torn up last year had been fixed. I would recommend the race. It can be hot, like in 2005, but it can also be a perfect temperature like it was this year. My goal at the beginning of the season was to break 5:30 in the half. I have had a very up and down season and that in combination with getting a stomach virus last week caused me to revise my goal down to just going faster than last year (5:43). So I'm ecstatic, I made not only my race day goal but my beginning of year goal that I had given up on. This was a great way to end the season...now if I could only get faster on the bike. :)

  • Comments: My goal was to come in under six hours, so I'm glad I made that. This was one of the most enjoyable races I've been in. I was worried that he distance would be a problem but I felt strong the entire race. Maybe I could have gone a little faster but for my first race of this distance I didn't know what to expect. Also saw some of the AZ Tri Club Guys which was cool. The day could not have been better, I don't know how we got so lucky but it was overcast all day long which really kept the temperature down. Overall great race and experience.

  • Comments: Really enjoyed the race. It was my First 1/2 Ironman and thus was a great challenge. I really liked all the commaraderie that I recieved from people on BT, people I have raced with, and AZ Tri Club members. It makes races even more fun when there are people you know out there, so thanks BTers. Looking forward to seeing and racing with some of you again at IMAZ! Oh, I also was sporting a orange mohawk for the race (well that which stayed orange).

  • Comments: I really had a great time doing this race. There are definitely TONS of stuff for me to work on for the next race. However, I had fun, and the race itself wasn't too painful (the cramping was frustrating), and I'm stoked for the NEXT ONE! :)

  • Comments: With the expection of the registration/ check-in on Saturday which was pretty un-organized this was by far the best race I've down of any distance. This is the only race I've down where they actually had ice for us BOP'ers all the way to the end of the run. I've done 6 other races of various distances that had coke at the aid station but they have always been out by the time I rn by. Every station and COLD COKE, ice, water and enven food items. Dang these people are good at there jobs and the Volunteers are great as well.

  • Comments: Registration took quite a long time, and the bike course was laid out kind of goofy, but overall a good event. Results with splits were posted on their website when I checked the very next day! I checked the results, and I finished in front of those 3 people, so I wasn't last! :) There were also 41 DNFs, so I'm glad I wasn't one of those.

  • Comments: Except for the event check in the day before (which was an eternity of lines in the sun on concrete), this was a blast for me. I wasn't expecting coming down the chute with fans cheering and my time ticking away. It was like a real race. I told someone it's like I was in a poor man's Ironman. I know that it reads like I was disappointed with myself and my time, but in the end, I need to cut myself some slack. Less than a year ago I decided to give this tri thing a try. I couldn't swim 50 consecutive meters and had only raced in a couple of bike road races and crits. The last time I ran before this was in High School in track...and I was a sprinter! I completed 2 sprint triathlons and this Quarterman. Not a bad year for my money. And a lot of the credit goes to this site and the people who post their experiences. So, for year 1, I thank you and look forward to year 2.

  • Comments: I'm happy with my performance the time is a starting point to work from. I need to pay more attention to bike speed and to training for the run. The new nutrition strategy on the bike seemed to work well although I might have benefited from a 4th bottle on the bike. Overall the race was good but they had too major problems this year that were not present last year. First, bike registration took way too long (2+ hours stuck in the sun the day before the race). I ended up getting a sunburn just trying to register. Second, the bike course was dangerous. After the first loop it was considerably safer since everyone knew what to expect but I was almost taken out by someone going the other direction which is just plain wrong.
