When we were in Disney my husband and I would take turns pushing the stroller. Whoever was pushing was always the one walking faster. Sounds like a great workout! I hate crosswind. For my race Sunday I followed Jeff and Dirk's advice and took liquid nutrition on the bike. It worked out perfectly for me. I was planning on gels but I'm really glad I switched. There is also a thread in tri talk about Oly distance nutrition that has some good advice. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jeff, as far as drinking on the bike , I drank a little over 1/2 the aero bottle, the one that goes between he handles so I'm not sure how much it was and i drank probably 8 - 10 oz during the run. We had a great opportunity last night to watch "The Last Mile". It will be shown at the Boston Film Festival whatever that is, maybe Dirk/Warren will explain since they have been to Boston. Anyway, it is a phenomenal film, partially filmed right here in Tallahassee, when you see the start of a marathon, you will see the FSU stadium in the background. It is the race Jen and I did in February. In the film they talk about Why do you run, they go from the Kenyon Elites to everyday folks to people running for causes. It is just a fantastic film and if you get a chance to watch it, do youself a favor and get it. |

And you know how after you frostbite something once, it's more prone in the future? Tip for all you icers...if you use REAL ice, you probably won't get frostbite because melting ice is always around 33 degrees. But if you use those chemical ice packs, they can be whatever temperature your freezer is at....perhaps 0 degrees. Get some Styrofoam coffee cups and fill them with water and freeze. When you ice, you can keep peeling off the Styrofoam to expose more ice and your fingers will stay warm and comfy while holding the cup. |

I'm thinking of a HIM but just the swim and bike at the end of the month. Dina LOL, sounds like you got your racing swag back and the aqua/bike is a really good idea. My friend is doing the same since he has been dealing with PF in his foot. He stopped running and increased his biking this season and is doing a aqua/bike HIM next month. Well I know I said that there was absolutely no way that I would do an Ironman race next year. No way! However I am probably going to do IM Mount Tremblant and will probably register on Monday when it opens. I know, I know I said NO WAY but a few of my close friends who I've been training with the last two years are doing it and really these guys have taken my under their wing to help me out so much I'd never been able to make the progress I've made without their help. Plus it will still give me time to get ready for the NYC Marathon which I'm doing in 2014. I was really considering doing IMWI again for 2014 but I don't think I can swing it with the marathon on the horizon. It would be an awesome opportunity to do it with them sooooooo............. They only thing I'm hestitant about is the amount of time going into training. If I do it I will have to train less and more efficiently this time around. My goals will be modest as usual, just wanting to finish but I need to free up more time for the family if I decide to do it. I'm still thinking it over and I'll have until Monday to decide. My wife gave me the ok but it didn't sound too resounding so I want to make sure if I decide to do it she's onboard otherwise I'll defer until 2015. |

One of my friends is racing it this year and is actually trying to KQ it. I'm excited for him he's got a good shot at it too. I'm still on the fence, I want to do it with my friends but after going through it this year and I'm not even done yet lol I really have to make sure I'm up for doing this all over again and that my wife is not going to be upset with me for choosing to do it. I've learned alot this year and I can tell you I would do things differently. We'll see and I'll let you guys know. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, ha! Just a few weeks ago you were saying zero percent chance you do another and you're ready for this to be over... now we hear this crazy talk about re-upping... you got the bug! It would be fun to do it w/ friends. And you would have ppl to train with. I understand what you mean about the family. I've been telling Jen "it's temporary"... "just for a few months"... and she has been supportive. We've also agreed to have at least 2 family nights per week. It sounds like IMWI is a pretty tough course... is IMMT easier? If so, maybe you could get by with a little less training? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tony, It would appear you have been bitten, as Will has pointed out. Does IMMT sell out quickly? If not maybe you should take a little more time to consider whether you'll jump on this race and training again next year. I'm not trying to be a downer but if your wife isn't all on board than maybe she needs more time, which in turn means you need to take more time to consider the family ramifications. _______ I have a had a unpredictable 7 days. Last week was having to do an emergency brake job on Laiken's car on Thursday, Saturday was an emergency starter replacement on Laiken's car and last night a good friend of mine landed in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer. He is fine but still in the the hospital as they try to get his hemoglobin levels back up but that may require a transfusion today. I spent a couple of hours with him last night just. He and his family have been very close to us over the years and have provided much support recently as we have struggled through some other issues. With all that stuff going on and other struggles training volume has been lower than I am used it and it is a major distraction for me. I am so used to being active that I feel out of my element. I actually think this time in my life is teaching me a few lessons but I'm a slow learner and it'll take a lot of re-enforcing before I get it. I can say this, God has been very good to me and my family. (I sure could use a "Tri-mom" smile more frequently these days.) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks guys for the advice and I think IMMT will sell out quickly. It may not go in a day but it is gaining popularity so if I do it I will register when it opens. I think my wife is good with me doing it. I don't think she was is a very good mood when I discussed it with her initially and you guys are right I wouldn't do this if she was not onboad. Ironman is really a pretty selfish undertaking when you come down to it and you don't really do it alone. It takes a lot of support to be able to do it. My dilemma is jump on a great opportunity to do this with my friends or not have a life for another year lol. I'm leaning towards doing it and will decide by the weekend. I'll also have further conversations with my wife as I really don't want her to say she is good and really not be. If that were the case I'd pass until 2015. Last night I nailed one more milestone mainly for my confidence. I did 2 out and backs across the lake last night. It was 2.17 miles in 1:28, I know short of 2.4 miles but it was getting late and dark so I did not try to do a little more but I defintely could have. I swam slow and easy like I would in the IM and I felt great. I was not tired, stressed or out of breath in anyway which was great. I also tried to mix up my breathing, right side only every other stroke, bilateral every third stroke and surprisingly left side only every fourth storke. I did that left side breathing on every fourth and I really liked that one. I think that is going to be big since the bouys are all to the left at IMWI and the sun is to the right. Nice to know I have the option and feel comfortable with it. I know I'm gonna be pretty slow probably a 1:40 - 1:45 but at least I feel comfortable and am good with that. Shooting for 20 mile run this evening and that would be it. I never thought I'd say it an really mean it but man as unbelievable as it seems I'm really ready to do this. Hopefully things get better for you so you can get time back for your training. |

I think they are like 12% grades on those and the descents can be terrifying lol. It's a two loop bike course. The run is a trail/ road run which is pretty cool. They removed the old railway tracks and use it as a trail. I know the run has some hills as well. The swim is pretty much and out and back in the lake. I think the biggest thing with IMMT is the competition. If you want a Kona slot this is a tough race since the locals are fast. Nothing for me to worry about there lol. |

Jeff thank you I can't tell you how much that means to me. I truly never thought I'd be able to do all this stuff and really am amazed at how far I've come in such a short time. All I can say is I've had ALOT of help in making it this far. If it weren't for the Junkies who have been incrediablely supportive and helpful along with the LI contigent of triathletes especially the few who took the time out to mentor me I'd not be in the postion I'm in. I'm truly grateful to you guys and everyone who has helped and supported me. You guys have shared your knowledge and experience with me and I've definitely benefitted from that. Being a part of the Junkies is one the best things to happen to me and I'm glad you guys have been on this journey with me. I just can't wait to for Sept. 8th to get here. |

You'll do great! Dina, No wetsuit, confused drivers on the course, busted chain, sore heel, and you still pull off a PR? You are one amazing Junkie. And go easy on the ice there! Tony, Another IM!?! You truly are a Junkie.
As for me I'm trying to get back into a training routine again after missing 4 days in a row. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I feel I can speak for all of us in the group; It has been a great pleasure to help you get on your horse and ride. I truly enjoy each person in this group and helping, where I can, with each of your endeavors in the triathlon world and beyond. In my experience the triathlon community has been very friendly and accommodating as I began my first training sessions. In your gratefulness to us and the local athletes you train with, make sure you pay the knowledge gained forward so other athletes can feel the love, so to speak. Part of making our sport, and our lives, something real and meaningful is passing on what we can to others, leaving a legacy of friendship. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A brief update on my friend. He's still in the hospital right now but expected to get out today. they decided not to transfuse the blood to get his counts up, opting rather to allow his body work naturally. He's fine and other than lying in a bed for 48 hours, in good spirits. I know he appreciates the prayers from all of you and I too am thankful that you have been thoughtful enough to include him in your thoughts. |

Thanks for taking the time to always be here for the group, lift our spirits, provide advice and answer questions especially when your own plate is so full. But I have to say, I looked at your training log and it looks like you have been training plenty to me |

![]() Ok, so my next little adventure will most likely be The Great Illini HIM aqua/bike which is August 31. I have 16 days to cram for this race because I know that is absolutely the best plan ever I'm going to drop all running for now, let my foot heal up and just focus on swim & bike. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dina, good luck and enjoy the aqua bike, personally I can't think of anything worse, well except for a pure swim w/o a bike..lol Hey enjoy the event. Dirk, good news for your friend, tell him he has prayers coming from the Junkies and he is doing us all a favor too, reminding us how fragile life really is. |
