Comments: My goal was 1:42 and I started off a bit faster then the pace I needed so I decided why not try and hang onto that pace. Everything was going fine until about mile 5 I started to wonder if my legs would hold up. Not a good thought so early in the race. I took my stingers and kept going. At mile 6 I took the endurolytes and between the two I seemed to peep up some. Around mile 8 or 9 I picked up on the pace of a lady that had been in front of me the whole race. She made the comment that "if we cut through that field this race would be shorter" which I laughed at. Started chatting it up which made me take my mind off of my pace. We got to what I think was an ill advised 180 degree turn. As soon as I made the turn I felt my IT band tighten up. This through off my pace for the next mile by about 20 or 30 seconds. After that mile it loosened again and McPherson (the woman was from McPherson) and I picked up another runner to run with. We kind of traded off who was pushing the pace. Towards mile 11 I could feel them start to drop pace a little, at that point I knew if I wanted to beat my time I couldn't afford to drop back and try to push them so I just kept going. As I kept getting closer I kept checking my paces and I was ahead of schedule. I tried to pick it up more the last mile but my legs didn't have anything left in them. My cardio could have pushed it harder but not the legs. It was a great feeling turning down Douglas and coming over the bridge to see everyone cheering you on. Especially when the clock was 1:40:31 for my time. What would you do differently?: I started a new job in March and it through off my workouts. I did maybe 1 long run in March. I logged enough miles in March to qualify for one week. If I hadn't sucked so bad on my running that month I think I could have drop down to 1:38 or so. But I'm glad I made the job change. Post race
Warm down: I ran the Sparky's 1 mile kids race with my 3 year old daughter. Everyone got a kick out of her and they were really cheering her on when we came to the finish line. Great experience. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not running in March. Last updated: 2013-07-08 12:00 AM

I got up and ate my usual breakfast of peanut butter toast with honey and a banana. I packed my honey stingers and some endurolytes in my pocket for a mid race refuel. I checked the weather and debated on what to wear. Would I need a long sleeve shirt due to the weather or would the tank top be enough. Ultimately I decided to go with the tank due to how hot I usually get.
I did normal stretching, jogging, etc.. to get ready. As they started telling everyone to line up it appeared that no one wanted to the front. Luckily they made the faster people move in front of me. I started to take off my throw away shirt with 2 minutes until race time but quickly put it back on until 15 seconds left.
