Overall Rank = 136/142
Age Group = F50-54
Age Group Rank = 5/7
Pre-race routine:

Got up, had a bowl of oatmeal and packed the last of my stuff before driving over to the race site.
Event warmup:

One quick lap in the pool.
Swim
  • 08m 43s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty easy swim. I'm not a fast swimmer so this went well. Time includes the long run to transition.
Transition 1
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

First time using clipless bike shoes so I took a little extra time here.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - just need to learn to speed things up a bit.
Bike
  • 1h 23m 35s
  • 20 miles
  • 14.36 mile/hr
Comments:

The race website said "flat and fast". Fast is not a word that will ever be used to describe my biking abilities and apparently my idea of flat is very different than other people's. To me this was more of rolling hills - which is fine, I just wasn't expecting them. Also, my first race using the clipless pedals/shoes. That went OK until the turnaround. I don't do U-turns on a good day. I couldn't get my feet unclipped and knew I was going to go down so I headed off into the grass which made the crash not so bad. I have a scraped up elbow and a huge bruise on my leg, but otherwise me and the bike were OK. My bike computer showed a time of 1:19:xx so I lost about 4 minutes there with the crash. Otherwise the ride went well - a bit breezy in some sections and it got a little warm but not too bad.
What would you do differently?:

Just need more practice with clipping in/out and I really need to ride hills more often.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Not used to changing shoes so this took a little longer than my usual T2 time.
What would you do differently?:

Preview the course so I know what to expect.
Run
  • 49m 13s
  • 4 miles
  • 12m 18s  min/mile
Comments:

I didn't wear my watch for the run so had no idea how I was doing. Ended up faster than I thought (I felt really slow), and about average pace for me. Nice, flat trails although it got really warm in the sun. Aid stations every mile though which was nice.
Post race
Warm down:

Found something to eat and had a cold Sprite (they ran out of water).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need a lot more work on the bike, endurance and hills.

Event comments:

Overall, a good race. I'd like to try it again next year.

My right knee has a pain in the front, just below the kneecap. I walked 24 miles of IM Louisville. No pain while walking but it started immediately when trying to run.

So here I was, a hard-working, respectable, just-turned-forty-six-year-old, who never considered herself athletic, lining up in my swim cap and goggles for my first triathlon.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.

What to wear under the wetsuit? What to wear for the bike and the run? Good thing someone invented the wonderful trisuit, to which we’ve become accustomed. It’s supposed to make our lives so simple.

Enter the new TYR X-Sight goggles. The X-Sights have been designed with a flexible nose bridge that (surprise, surprise) is shaped like an “X”.

Can anyone think of a better way to spend Labour Day weekend than doing your first tri? Ok, maybe doing your 2nd, 3rd...50th tri...but you get my point. :)
