I'm working in New York for a week and I'm turning up on Superbowl Sunday - I'm staying downtown in the Millenium Hilton - any tips on the best place to go to take in the whole experience? Cross post to triathlon forum - I'm also looking for a decent place to swim too...... |

Go to Times Square once or twice -- I once had to stay there for a month and it was really quite craptacular after the first two days. I really enjoy Alphabet City (I think that's what it's called where Aves. A-M are) and the lower east side is cool. |

By the "whole experience", do you mean the whole NYC tourist experience, or the whole watching the Super Bowl in NYC experience? The latter depends heavily on if the Giants are in the game and also if you really are interested in watching the game with Sound, or just going to a packed EXTREMELY over-priced scene (re: ESPN zone). One thing I found interesting about a big sports event in NYC (i.e World Series, Super Bowl, etc) are the amount of people that really don't give a crap about the "big" game. |

Subject: RE: Arrive in New York on Superbowl Sunday. so much to do in NYC...if this is your first time here...I would head down to little Italy and chinatown (walking distance from the Hilton) for GREAT food and get the touristy feel to being in NYC. Run in Central park or right there by Battery Park. The Metropolitan museum...I would take a cab, I would not take the subway...and head to Midtown...42nd street...Rock Center. Meat packing district...Chelsea...Battery park...Plenty to do. Swimming you might need membership but I think the hotel does have a pool. Edited by crazyt1971 2008-01-17 8:40 PM |

All good advice, except my 2 cents woudl be that I would take the subway. Cabs are expensive--save your money for other stuff. The NYC subway is nothing like what it used to be. "The Warriors" was a long time ago. (Of course, if you're on business and you're expensing eveything anyway, then by all means, cab it.) |

I would say if you want to truly "experience" NYC then take Subway and Cab. Subways are completely safe. Be sure to tell the cab driver that you're in a hurry and can he go really fast...then just hold onto your horses! |

Extreme Veteran 413 | Subject: RE: Arrive in New York on Superbowl Sunday. It'll certainly be a different experience - usually I get my brother round, we get the beers in and my wife shakes her head as she goes to be around midnight just as we're settling down for the event to start at 1am - then we usually fall asleep thanks to all the adverts somewhere during the third quarter... Managed to stay up for the whole thing last year though!! How far away are you Lauren? What a laugh that would be! My brother is thinking about taking the week off work and coming with me too. Although that will place a massive strain on my self imposed rule of six months off the lash and hoping to keep up with all my training whilst I'm there! Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Some of my colleagues from New York are in London next week so hopefully they'll provide some useful info too.. Edited by Cando 2008-01-18 8:33 AM |
