Are you doing indoor races? If not, why bother? A total waste of time imo. Spend your time on form, speed wll come.

I'd love to... next time you're in CO. It's kinda hard to teach without being able to show. But I will say that I was never "taught". I just started doing them and after awhile asked a coach if it looked right and he said 'yeah'. So just start about 3 or 4 yards behind the black 'T' at the end of the pool and give it a shot. Wear nose plugs or remember to blow out your nose HARD or you'll give up pretty quickly.... ;-)

First, practice doing somersaults mid-lane as you swim.  Once you are good at that, do a somersault as you approach the wall.  Kick off on your back.

If you don't drown, do a barrel roll to put yourself back in freestyle position.

As you progress, you will eventually be able to twist around and kick off in the right position.

One tip:  Don't breath for your last one or two strokes heading into the wall.

Flip turns, BTW, are great conditioning even if you are not doing pool races.

BTW, what is an "indoor race."  Is there some place where they put pools inside of buildings?  Never heard of that in California.

Can't claim credit for the link...a post a few days ago had this in it and I bookmarked it.

It has a nice movie to go with it as well.  The only thing I can't really figure out is after I have flipped, when do I get in the turn - during the pushoff, during the turn, or after the pushoff is complete

OK, I practiced tonight. But did somethng wrong somewhere. Flipped and turned and blow air through nose instead of going back, I continued same direction hit the wall head on

I just started doing them about 1 month ago (I'm in Chicago) and got them down so that I only miss the "mark" about every 5th turn now. Not too bad.

I had my masters coach teach me some basics for about 5 minutes after class and he said for me to justp play around with those "basic" skills and I'd get it. He was right.

Seriously, we're not doing flip turns in races as was already stated, so don't worry too much about form, but rather just concentrate on function.

My flip turns function awesomely but the form....who knows if it looks great....and I don't really care. All I know is that I can flip turn and come off the wall streamlined very quickly. Is it the correct "flip turn" form, don't know but I got a flip turn that works for me (i.e. no water in the nose, don't sink to the bottom, have solid foot plant with ample bent knees for push off).

So I guess what I'm saying is don't sweat "perfect form" as much as "perfect function." Get a buddy to teach you a couple basics in the pool (I'm in Chicago and could do that if you want since we're both downtown), then build on that to a flip turn that feels good for YOU and works good for YOU then really get back to focusing on your swim technique...

LOL! That's hilarious! I'd say just keep working on it. I think it makes for a fun thing to look forward to at the end of your workout. Since right now you're not all about speed, you can flip slowly, work on sighting the line at the bottom of the pool, pausing when you're back to horizontal, then opening up and pushing off. You'll have it in a matter of a few weeks (if not a few sessions)!
