hunting and pecking around on the net, ran across this posted on a site owned by someone connected with the race.  I knew FINA was coming out to look at the course, thought it was rleated to the distance fiasco.  Guess they're adding a 10K distance........

Starting in 2009, it will offer $20,000 as the only West Coast race on the global FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup (World Cup) pro circuit

Awesome, I am all in for next year

I figure that if swimming is anything like running this will be a fantastic race. I get killed at the shorter distances by the super fasties but fair much better over the longer distances.

I wonder if they will set up a longer course or if we are just gonna be doing 6 laps of the 1 mile course. (Gosh I hope they measure that one correctly) I also wonder if Paddlers will be allowed. 10k Swims usually include Nutrition stops and an escort would be the perfect thing for carrying my nutrition and hydration.

Yeah, I can only dream of being FOP in that crowd. but at least I have a better chance of not being DFL

But, I also have a year to improve my swim fitness. Training without a wetsuit in the ocean has really helped a great deal.

sorry... didn't mean to be a wet rag.

I had never heard of it but looks like FINA has a 10K world cup with races around the world.  This is probably as close to a pro swimming field as you would see.  ANd yeah, they have feeding "pontoons"

Pfffft, I'm all over that. Just a lazy Sunday morning.

Oh wait, this is SWIMMING?!

EDIT: Although for real, I'm considering it.

Wow! That's a long swim! I'm not there yet, but will so come cheer you guys on! I wonder if they'll require you to have a paddler. I know that Semana Nautica in Santa Barbara, which is a six mile swim, requires it.

Oh, crap, I guess I better get a lot faster if what Chris says about the lead finishers turns into reality on race day. (Better to plan for it I guess)

Just a few key rules:

OWS 6.9 No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device which may be an aid to their speed, endurance or buoyancy. Goggles, a maximum of two (2) caps, nose clip and earplugs may be used.

[IE. No Wetsuits, Speedsuits and probably Tri Suits]

OWS 6.10 Swimmers shall be allowed to use grease or other such substances providing these are not, in the opinion of the Referee, excessive.

OWS 6.16.1 In all events, time limits shall apply as follows from the finish time of the first swimmers:

Events under 25 km 30 minutes
Events of 25 km 60 minutes
Events over 25 km 120 minutes

OWS 6.16.2 Competitors who do not finish the course within the time limits shall be removed from the water except that the referee may allow a competitor outside the time limit to complete the course but not participate in any points or prizes awarded

Oops, that means the cutoff time for a 10k Swim is right around 2 Hours 30 Minutes. (2 Hours for the fastest finishers + 30 Minutes) That sounds very familiar and I think what the RD for PWOC had proposed for the 5k swim last year. (But they later modified it)

This also sounds very consistent with the 5k at LJRWS.

Short Version

10k Swim is as expected, a No Wetsuit Affair. Still unsure of Paddlers but the cutoff time for the race is gonna be quite agressive assuming that the RD sticks to the +30 Rule.

I am certainly in no contention for prizes or points so if the RD will give me an official time after the "Mandated Cutoff", I am fine with it. If not, I have a lot of training to do

ETA: Ok, that is a 1:22 / 100 Yd Pace to make the cutoff time so I guess it's not too bad. I am not there yet but I think Chris is that fast.

Not for 6, or even 3 miles, am I that fast.....

At any rate, Long Beach's beaches are closed for (another) sewage spill.   That's how many in the last couple months alone?  4 that I know of.  I would think FINA might like a more reliable venue.
