I have sign up for Ironman Louisville and cannot wait to get started. I have the Chicago marathon left to do this year and then will take a couple week break and get started on the training. Does anyone have any good training plans that are free for the off season to get me ready. If not I was just going to:

1) Go slightly slower than summer training paces
2) Slowly increase time/miles on my key workouts
3) Try to get 3-4 swims per week (limiter), 3 bikes in a week, and 2-3 runs in. I figure running puts so much pounding on the legs that I will focus on the other 2 and wait till we get closer.

I know that I will be advised to get a coach especially since this is my first one but I really don't have the money for one right now. I have done 3 HIM without a coach and my fastest time has been 5:13. Which I am happy with so I hope that translates to being able to follow a generic Ironman plan and finishing happy. Thanks for any help.

Congrats! I'm in for Louisville in 09 as well.  It will be my first and i'm already excited, although i do need a little break after my last HIM of the season and my marathon.

What do you plan on doing for a training plan. I am going to follow 13 weeks to a 13 hour Ironman.

I'm still up in the air on which plan to follow. I've been reading be beironfit and was thinking about his plan. It's a 30 week plan, but the first 10 are really just base training. I'm not sure though.

Congrats on signing up for the IM.  I can't even fathom that distance right now.  Good Luck in Chicago!  I will be down there cheering for all of you "crazy" people.  And by "crazy" I mean ridiculously in shape and totally inspiring.

Congrats...! It is going to be a fun journey. I know you said that you do not have the money for a coach, but have you thought about upping the membership on this site and checking out the IM plans? There have been several that I know of, that used them. Just a thought.

Whatever you chose to do, enjoy the ride....

Not free, but a lot of bang for your buck...

I would consider upgrading you membership here.  Last winter I used one of BT's  winter maintenance programs/half marathon program for a race in April, then went straight in my IM Louisville training using BT's intermediate HR based IM program.

BTW, if you are like me you will more than make up for the cost of the BT membership upgrade in the retail discounts that the membership offers.  I spent a ton of money on Infinit nutrition and gear from trisports.com, both of which offer discounts for premium BT members.

Congrats!

I'm not sure if there is off season training plan to go along with an IM training plan.

I would work on your base training, just staying in good physical shape.  Core workouts and weight training is good in the off season.  If you are weak on the swim, off season is a good time to focus on that.  Do some swim, bike, run workouts but see if you can find a different activity to incorporate into your mix.  I go to the gym and use the rowing machine, the stair climber, the stair master.  I maybe do one of each SBR workout a week in the off season and pick it up as time gets closer to my actual training.

It depends on your goal if you want/need a coach.  It looks like you have some good HIM times so I'm guessing you'll be fine.  You can pick up a lot of pointers here and other places to get you by.  The one thing that a coach might be able to help you with would be a nutrition plan for your IM, but you can figure that out on your own as well.

Well I would suggest getting to love the bike and bike lots and not run 3 marathons and 50k in 8 weeks at the start of the training season.

I would suggest riding the utter century if you never done a century bike before.

I do second strength training since in my case I failed in my attempt because I had muscle imbalances that did not show up until I really jumped into my training hard.

I wish you the best of luck in your training.
