Subject: Cycling to Tucson
Hey All,
My coach and a few other people I train with are kicking around the idea of cycling from Tempe to Tucson in preperation for Ironman AZ. Does anyone know a pretty good and safe route to get there? We checked out MapmyTri but didn't see a whole lot. Hope everyones training is going well and thanks in advance
Mario

Wow. I wish I was ready for a ride like that. I would love to do it. Maybe if you do it next year. Good luck.

What distance are you shooting for?  I ask as it seems Tempe to Tucson requires a ride back (?or is it an overnighter with a return the next day?)  If you want 140ish miles and a safer (as in less cars) you may consider Tempe to Wickenburg (approx 145-160 miles round trip depending upon start place)  This gives some nice Carefree Hyway and US60 biking.

I think Harry (hjmiii) rode to Tucson this spring.  Not sure how much he's checking the forums these days maybe shoot him a PM if he doesn't pipe up.

I have done that ride a couple of times from a couple different angles. Like Jerry said, it depends on the goal. I have in-laws down there, and it's a nice 128ish miles from my place in Dobson Ranch down to theirs in Rita Ranch (far south Tucson), so it's easy to bike down and get a ride back.

The best routes between here and there are on the East side of I10. Here are a couple of my maps:

Casa Grande to Saguaro 300K brevet:

'08 Gaba Century:

My home-to-inlaws route:

You can see the gist in all three on how to get down there. My only advice is once you get down to Oro Valley, avoid the west side of I10 and downtown Tucson. The roads are HORRIBLE.  I did it to avoid the 30mile false flat climb in the Brevet map, but if time doesn't matter I'd head down the Eastern route and make the climb up into Oracle or else turn east on Tangerine and head up there.

Feel free to ask more questions since the maps only give so much detail.  For instance, There are frontage roads along I10 from Picacho down to Oro Valley, but the map looks like I'm riding on the freeway (don't do that )

This topic has me inspired. I'd love to ride from Arrowhead, northwest glendale area, to wickenburg. Is the 60 bikable along that route? Also, anyone ever do that? ...wanna go with me?

I'd like to join a group heading out from Tempe (maybe ride from Maricopa and meet up along the way).  That sounds like something that might motivate me to put in some more bike time.

Mario I do think that you have started something cool. Even I am feeling the urge to try this. But 60miles is my max so far. I am not sure I can double it just yet.

Thanks for all the responses and advice! We are planning on doing this around mid October or so and we are planning on staying over and cycling back the next day. Right now we've been doing loops of Usury Pass and the towers..ugh!!! If anyone is interested let me know as the date gets closer. Thanks again!
