Subject: Looking for an Iron race for 2009
Well I'm on the hunt for an Iron Distance event. I was planning on doing Redman but it's date is a few weeks into the school year and I can't take any school off to do the race. I'm looking for something in late July or anytime in Aug and I've found three so far. Vineman is at the beginning of August, IDT at Plymoth Rock and The Canadian 226 are at the end of August.

Are there any other options in that time frame that I didn't see?

Also does anyone have any recommendations on which one I should do? Do they usually fill up pretty fast?

It's a great race.  Take a look at the Race Reports forum and you'll see about 50 new race reports on this year's race.

I would love to do that but I'd prefer it to be a wetsuit legal race. I've only been swimming for about 9 months as of now. I just completed a HIM and I'll have another year of swimming under my belt for the full IM but would still rather do the 2.4 in a wetsuit.

It might be hard to find a wetsuit legal IM in late July or Agust....unless maybe you go to the southern hemisphere.

I did Plymouth Rock this year in a relay. I think 75 individuals did it and 10 relays. No I don't think it will fill fast but it will fill faster than last year as many local folks wanted to see how it went first year before committing their A race to a brand new race. Last year they announced the race in the winter so many folks wanting to do an IM had already made plans having signed up for M Dot races already.

I wrote a long race report with pros and cons....you may want to check it out.

Roads are open to traffic and fairly busy, windy with small shoulders which isn't ideal for bike race. Bike course was short.

Course is loops 4 on the bike and 4 out and back on the run so it is spectator friendly. 

Registration is open for 2009 already.

Vineman is wetsuit legal. Water was about 72 degrees. It is the longest run IM in North America and next year will be it's 20th anniversary. Very well run race that even has been a branded event in the past.

Lake Placid still has community fund slots available if you are willing to pay the extra $$$... tax deductible though.

Slight correction, Vineman is generally wetsuit legal, but not always. There was a lot of activity on the board this year when the water temperatures were 80 degrees a week before Vineman half Ironman. They dropped to 73 by the day of the race, but it's not guarenteed.

I'll probably end up doing Vineman. If I were to do an MDot race, I would probably have to skip all my sprint/olympic triathlons during the summer to make up for the extra entry fee money, which would not be cool. I do like the idea of short loops for the Plymouth Rock one though, I'll still look into that one a bit more and read some race reports.

They also had hypothermia problems at the 70.3 this year. But that isn't the race we were talking about anyway.


If Vineman has the buy 2 get one free like they did last year, you can probably find a couple of people from the board to sign up. I paid $267 to get in this year on that deal.
