How does one deal with a long trainer ride? Weather may keep me indoors for my planned 53 mile ride!

I do my bike and run training by time, not distance. But, you can shorten the ride and do one that's more intense than what an outdoor 53-miler would have been....

Also, see the other thread.

53 mile ride - My longest this year was 100 mile trainer ride (6 hours or so from what I remember). Watched 3 movies. It was quite the long time inside. I think that might be the definition of insanity......

The ONLY way I can stay sane on the trainer is to watch movies. For short workouts I like spinervals otherwise it's TiVo time!

Because of the really crappy spring we had here in W. Michigan, I did three 5+ hour trainer rides in prep for IMCDA this year......Thank goodness for a large screen TV and DVD's!! That and a lot of ESPN. I'm a pre-dawn workout guy due to family/work schedules, so the only other option on cable at that hour was infomercials or Star Trek re-runs (no offense Trekkies, I've just already seen them all more than once!).

If you can, try to recruit some of your riding buddies to "share the love." A group trainer ride can be fun and it sure makes it less "painful" than doing it alone!

I do a lot of trainer rides. 40miles last night, I find movies do not work for me. If a movie is very intense, I may slow down and become too interested in it. If it is slow, I get bored. I find that television series work best. Get good shows on DVD, download them, whatever. That way you have segments that are about an hour long (50min after commercials are removed), to break the monotony. I have watched all 4 seasons of Lost, the last season of british Top Gear, Dexter, Firefly, and a few other series. I have watched ALOT of movies as well, I just find that TV shows work better for me, because if a particular episode is slow, I know I have something else coming up soon, and I can get drawn in to a series this way opposed to watching an episode once a week.

Another thought, I'm a big fan of riding in all weather. Sure it makes a mess of your bike. But come race day say if it rains for 16+ hours you been there done that before and it isn't that big of a deal.

My last 3 long rides before IMLP, it rained between 2-6 hours, so when it rained all day at Lake Placid I was fine.

I ride in the winters in MA usually around 3 hours on the weekends outside when it is 30 or warmer.

With proper gear most folks can ride if it is 20 or above.

Trainer rides for me in the winter are power based hard interval sessions. Only on a rare occasion will I do a long ride on the trainer.
