Subject: JobHunters/Employers: Resume sites?
So in the never ending search for meaningful employment, I'm trying to check out some of the "larger" job search websites. I've got my resume on sites specific to my industry, but I was wondering if I should be branching out to Monster, CareerBuilder, etc. Has anyone had any success posting their resumes there? Employers: do people really use this as a resource?

Pho,

I was out of the job market for nearly 22 years and had to really learn how to find a job again.  I had some success (5 offers) after posting my resume on Monster and Careerbuilder.  I did all the regular things one does when job hunting; searching the internet, applying, calling, following up, using past contacts etc.

If you're not opposed to working for "da man", also checkout USAJOBS.gov.  That is where I got my current gig.  If you're overseas, you can search for positions by location.

If I can, what's your speciality?

I do think posting your resume on Monster and Career Builder is worthwhile...but you'll get some annoying email from generic recruiters, so just be prepared.  Luckily, it's mostly email and not phone calls.  Also, it normally only happens right when you update your resume on those sites.  You'll want to update it every few weeks/ once a month since I think your profile will show up more for potential employers if it's recent.

Another pretty good website I started using in 2008 is indeed.com.  It seems to search the entire web, company websites and smaller industry websites and puts the listings on this one site.  It was kinda like a one stop shop for nights I just wanted to do a quick search for any new jobs.  It is a lot quicker than going to half a dozen different sites.

Good luck, hope this helps!  I searched for a job while working(at 2 crappy jobs) and after being laid off for about 3 years until October and I'm finally happy.  So just keep at it and you'll find something!

Believe it or not, I've applied for a couple of openings at USAJOBS. There are a bunch of archivist/keeper/curator jobs in the government (more specifically in the military branches), but I've only been "wait listed" for them, no interviews.

I am looking to go into museums/cultural resources/archives. I've got some specialty in the 19th century and the turn of the century, especially with ceramics and stained glass. Ideally, I'd like to land in collections management (loans, keeping, curation, etc) or education, but I'll take what I can get at this point.

Pho,

The key to getting an interview for federal jobs is having the key words from the job posting in your resume.  Hate to say it, but I copied/pasted the job desciption from the announcement and wrote my resume around it.

My last two jobs I got through Dice.com.  I've never had any luck with any of the other sites.

I had a pretty detailed profile up at www.Linkedin.com

The headhunter for the job I have now found me there.  It might be worth a try.

You might want to check with auction companies like Sotheby's if you are into item collection

Get a profile on Linkedin.com. You can connect with previous coworkers and get them to recommend you there. It's a great website to direct potential employers to.

Go put up a profile and resume on Career Builder and Monster.

Recruiters will scan the resumes there and call/email you about jobs. So far, the two interviews I have lined up are because of that very reason. Not because I applied to 20 jobs I was qualified for.

Yes, you get a lot of generic "management opportunity!" emails and what not, but you can delete them.

The last 4 jobs I have gotten (2002-2005) I got thanks to Monster.

Cool, this is exactly what I needed to hear.

I've had a LinkedIn profile for a while (my husband and his coworkers are social networking technology junkies) and I like it. I've also put one up on Idealist.org (for non-profit job seekers). I signed up for Monster.com last night and I'll post my resume today. Thanks for the help!
