Subject: Coaching fee ...

My coach, who is a friend of mine and is helping me out for free (you can't beat that), is looking at potential clients.  My coach is looking for feedback from me.  A questionnaire he provided me includes what he was hoping to charge clients per month.  I am looking at providing some honest feedback to let him know if he was going to over-charge, or is in the range.

If you are being coached or are a coach, will you provide me some input and reply back to this thread?

1).  You do not have to say who your coach is.
2).  I'm just looking for how much you are paying per month.  $X.yz/month.
3).  If you are a coach, you may PM me.

I need to turn in his questionnarie by tomorrow, Tues. July 7, 2009.

Thank you for your time.  I appreciate it.

I'm coached.  He has a number of different programs, evaluation and testing, etc.  The one I do is the on-line Triathlon program at $45 per week.  It also depends on your sport - Marathon training is at $25 per week.  Personal training sessions are $60/hour.

It sounds like your friend is off to a good starting taking you on in order to gain experience before considering charging for their services.  However, I think that unless the coach is working in an established program, the next step should involve taking on a very limited number of athletes (say five or less) who they charge a nominal fee; just enough to cover costs (website, coaching software, insurance, etc).

From there, determining fees for athletes going forward should be a function of several items including their coaching experience and on-going education, whether they are developing a program for each individual athlete or simply working from a template, how much communication they will provide, how many athletes they will coach and whether there will be group workouts for local athletes to name a few of the considerations.

As for range of montly rates, there are very experienced coaches who are charging under $100/month and I have recently seen a couple of very novice coaches with websites offering their services for over $250/month.

Ultimately with whatever fee your friend decides on, there will probably be coaches who are charging more and coaches who are charging less.

Wow - online training for $45/week? That's good money to be made there - an experienced coach can eyeball someone's results and come up with a short-term plan and improvements within minutes. Get the volume up, and it's all good!

Of course, I probably shouldn't complain...my job is somewhat in a similar vein if you actually think about it...

I agree with the statement about individualization vs. template.  This was one of the keys for me when I searched for a coach.  A good coach should be willing and availalble to alter the next weeks workouts based on last week's results, including how the athlete feels, etc.  My coach does this.  Also, the problem with a template is that it will almost always have to be tweaked because of changes.  I mean, life happens, right?  I send him an email with my work/life schedule and make changes as required.

Its interesting that you mention the group workouts.  My coach is involved with my Triathlon team and leads a weekly track session for us (and his other clients) and does regular swim and run clinics throughout the season.  I haven't found a lot of others (if any) in my area who do this.

I used Mike Plumb for $85 a month, online only.

Then I used a local coach for $125 a month, 95% was online though. We met face to face a couple of times.

$125 was my limit though. And the coaches who had these silly plans that allowed me to talk to them only X times a month, etc. I never even considered.
