Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Two more sprints left in this my first season and i'm already thinking ahead towards next. I would like to focus on olys and perhaps end the season aug/sep 2010 with an HIM. Right now I can do the HIM swim and bike portions no problem (i'm contemplating doing an half-iron distance aquabike in sept), my big limiter is running - and losing about 25-35 more pounds. I can run a 5k right now slowly ~12:50 / mile. I just started running for the first time - and i mean first - at the beginning of the year, and am in the process of trying to slowly ramp the time/distance up. My question is at the end of this season does it make sense to try to add another run to be at 4x a week and cut the swimming and biking to maybe one long session a week. Or just stay with 2x s/b, 3x run and just keep ramping up slowly. I have plenty of time, but my gut says to just focus on the run for now since it is so slow, and i'm not even close to half-marathon distance. Any advice? Thanks! Kiri |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Seems like a reasonable plan...you can probably shift focus after your sprints and still have plenty of opportunity in the off-season to focus on running. The last two winters when I did an early March marathon, I shifted from 3 to 4 runs a week after my last tri to prep for that. The key is "ramping up slowly" as you describe it yourself. Be patient. You've got a lot of time to prepare for an HIM late next year--weight loss in and of itself will accomplish alot, so keep working on that. Good luck! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How well do you recover from today's runs? If you're popping Advil, icing, and otherwise hobbling around after each run, adding a fourth run probably isn't the right solution. Running is probably the place where triathletes are most easily injured from overuse and/or improper training. Build slowly and allow enough time to recover. You're talking about building to a half-marathon in a year (actually a little more than a year). You'll eventually need to build up to a 10+ mile long run. When you've built up a long run to 6+ miles and can still recover quickly, you might add a 4th run to the schedule, but at that time, you'll probably want to s/b more than once a week too. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm recovering pretty well - haven't popped any pills and no hobbling. I think your idea of not adding a 4th run day til after 10k distance is good - definitely going to do that. The plan was to do run plans 5k-10k, then 10k-half, and then do half iron training plan, with maintenance s/b sessions thrown in during the all-run phase. Thanks all for the advice. kiri McFuzz - 2009-07-30 5:46 AM How well do you recover from today's runs? Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you can do it. Just take it slow and avoid injuries as you ramp up. Maybe, try to get to 6 miles by Febuary and 10 miles by July. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You could also try run/walk method. I was injured a year back and the PT said for me to run / walk...help mix it up. I have gotten faster doing this and knock on wood...injury free during my training for IM. I warm up with a 10 min walk, then run 8 min walk 1 min. EVERY RUN. My bricks, I only walk 5 min...then back to the 8 min run, 1 min walk. my races - HIM, IM I walk 5 min...then 8/1. - I started at 5 minutes, then bumped it to 8. 1 mile is too long for me to go without stopping as I am not terribly fast. I improved my run from the same HIM last yr to this yr by 9 minutes. granted a lot of factors...but felt good through the entire race. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but it is a good option I think. Good luck! Ann |

New user![]() | ![]() I second the run/walk suggestion. You should check out some of Jeff Galloway's info. He is definitely a reliable source with a pretty impressive resume. Also, I used the run/walk method to finish my first marathon last year and plan to use to finish my HIM in 2010 and my full Ironman in 2011. http://www.jeffgalloway.com/ |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the suggestions of run/walk technique. I looked through Galloways site. Going to give the 5k - 10k plan a whirl and see how that goes. I think run/walk might work for me... Thanks again everyone, i'm definitely going to try to HIM next year. kiri |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey Kiri, I see that you're in Portland. Foot Traffic has a great half marathon training program that they do twice a year. The fall one trains folks to do the Run Like Hell in October, and the spring one prepares people to do the 4th of July flat half on Sauvies Island. It's designed for both seasoned and beginning runners. They have a 12 week program to get you up to speed to do a half. You are in great shape to start it since you can do a 5k right now. Their program has people run between 3 and 7 times a week depending on fitness, with most people being successful working up to 4 or 5 times a week. It may be worth looking into. |
