Subject: Tour de France calorie burn

CNN just did a factoid that the average Tour de France racer burns 5,900 calories per day!

An Ironman athlete weighing 155lbs and finishing in 14 hours will burn approximately 10,000 calories.

Wow... How much do you think Lance & co eat a day while doing the tour? A person can only eat so much a day, no?

Not to dispute CNN (we all know that they NEVER get anything wrong!!) but I have read in several places that the TDF guys burn 9,000 calories per day. I however have no data that I can cut and paste here to support this so I could be wrong......( Just call me Dan Rather)

9000 calories is a lot, esp. since they're "only" on the bike 5-6 hours a day, and most of that effort is relatively light, baring climbs and breaks. Most of the riding is done cruising in the peolton, conserving energy.

Ahhh...9000 max. That makes more sense. Like on a 220km day with three Cat. 1 climbs and a couple of HCs...

Rocket Man - 2005-10-17 2:58 PM

Here we go I know that I had seen 9,000 calories somewhere....

Exactly....and that is probably for Maggie Backstedt or Big George Hincapie.....those midgets that climb probably couldn't physically hold 9,000 calories.

Denise2003 - 2005-10-16 6:40 PM Wow... How much do you think Lance & co eat a day while doing the tour? A person can only eat so much a day, no?

That's why they loose weight during the tour...
