I have meant to ask this for a while.  Why is it consider rude and disgusting when people cough/clear throat and proceed to spit out the mucus on the street, and it's perfectly ok to spit and blow snort rocket when exercising?

Chinese people are constantly being made fun of for their "aaaHEM.... kaaTOOOO" all over the place.  Growing up I was thaught this is the most disgusting thing to do.  Therefore I never spit/blow snort rockets.  I get exercise-induce runny nose and I take kleenex/small towel with me on my ride.

don't you know, when you are riding a bike or running the rules don't apply to you anymore?

. . ., and it's perfectly ok to spit and blow snort rocket when exercising?

Man, it seems this is the week that people forget who we are and what we do.  We have coaches because WE'RE TRIATHLETES.  We brag and put others' exercise preferences down because WE'RE TRIATHLETES.  We think it's perfectly appropriate to cover one nostril and shoot mucus out the other in public because WE'RE TRIATHLETES.

Pay attention people.

Actually, spitting is the pre-Garmin Forerunner speed sensor.  If you can spit a wad straight aheand that holds together and hits the target, you are jogging, Z1.  If you have to turn your head to the side, then you are in z2.  If the wad misses the target, that's Z3.  If the wad breaks up in flight, that is Z4.  If all you can do is drool down your chin, Z5.

Spitting is retained by traditionalists in the sport and those who imitate without knowing the practice's true origin.

How do you account for the viscosity variant?

Never thought twice about it, especially training or racing, except when in close proximity to others.

I would not mind the proximity.
