I think this is characteristic of baseball players more so than any other sport. You frequently hear stories about players sending up money to the stands for fans to buy pizza, or calling out for anyone in the area to come and play catch with them kind of stuff. I run a baseball league here in Madrid, and this year for the second year running a guy named Jeremy Guthrie who pitches for the Royals has come out and put on a clinic for us. He brings gifts for the kids, does autographs, pictures, takes time to speak with and instruct every kid, and most important deliver in person a real postive message- if you believe in yourself, and work hard, good things will happen.

Of course football players are never that generous

I think as a whole football and football players have an image problem. Not sure why. Maybe too may hits to the head. Not saying baseball players are perfect but the shooting themselves (Plaxico + others), dui's (too many to mention), Sandusky like events, wife beatings, seem to be more frequented by football players than not...

The day after the Aurora Theater shootings Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith donated $20,000 to the victims relief fund.  Many other sports figures donate large amounts to charity but it is not publicized.

Nice story. Of course, he's a Yankee, so I still hope an anvil falls on his head, but still...

Hopefully the money he's giving is coming from that Pepsi commercial with One Direction.

While I applaud his donation and generosity, that's coming more from his foundation that his actual checkbook.

And where do you think the bulk of the funding for the foundation comes from?
