kenb - 2012-12-13 4:35 PM Wow , celebrity status nice !! Sorry to hear about Calvin, Weimaraners are such cool looking dogs, and lots of personality. So what's Keifer's rescue story?
Here's the LONG story
My now ex-hubhby and I had talked about adopting another dog and decided against it since we were living in San Francisco. We already had Calvin and he was going to day-care and we didn't want to spend the money for a second dog. Fast forward 6 days and Keifer shows up at the winery where my ex (Matt)was working at the time. Keifer was full of tics, weighed about 20 pounds, severely emaciated and his collar without tags had rusted.
It was a Saturday and Humane Society said they would mot come out to get him since it was late in the afternoon. Matt called and said "I'm bringing him home. I've named him Keifer after Keifer Sutherland, since he was in the Lost Boys and this little guy is a Lost Boy".
Matt arrived home and I saw Keifer and my heart melted as he slowly wagged his tail. That night we gave him 3 baths and the tics just ran off in the water, we also picked some off him that were the size of grapes. That night we took him to the emergency vet and they told us he was healthy and just needed to gain some weight. That night he slept in Calvin's bed, I still have that pic of him....just looking so relieved, he was safe, fed and clean.
The next day we took him back up to the human society and he was not micro-chipped and no one was looking for him. The officer told me "he will stay here about 8 days and if no one comes for him, yu can adopt him." I looked at him with tears rolling down my face and he said "well the other option is, take him home and give me your number. If someone calls looking for a dog like this, you will need to bring him back up. If we don't call you after 10 days, he is yours, don't even bother calling us as we are full at the shelter anyway"
10 Days later he was officially ours. We were meant to have a second dog, but he had to pick us. He wasn't house-broken and didn't trust people, so he just followed Calvin's lead. After 4-5 months he became the official greeter and said "hello" to every dog and person on the trail. People are amazed at what an amazing dog he is! Now he spends 2 weeks at the winery and 2 weeks hiking the trails and hanging out with his dog buddies with me (Ex and I share custody, LOL). Not a bad life for a homeless guy
