I just dropped my phone into a bucket of water and Lysol. New iPhone 5.

I hear a plop, and I'm like 'wonder what that was?' Oh, my phone falling out of my shirt pocket. It would be funny if it weren't so expensive to replace. I knew cleaning was bad for you.

Sigh.

Turn it off and puut it in rice for 2 days! NOW!

I dropped mine in the toilet about 2 months ago and it's still going strong! It also is cracked to all heck, the front and the back and I know water got inside. And it's still working!

Problem is I use it for business and can't be without for 3 days. Got the rice advice from the guy at the AT&T store. Funny guy, he says to me to make sure it's not cooked rice.

I have a bunch of the silica packs from electronic equipment. They work even better. If I was still in the lab I'd put it in a vacuum dessicator. Did that many years ago with a Palm Pilot and it worked like a champ.

This is what insurance is for..instead of $400-$600..you pay $100. I have gone through 3 Droids and my daughter 2 during this contract period..black screen of death during a software update didnt cost anything..just called verizon. Squished in car door and the last one I dropped and the earphone whole is wonky. My daughters screen smashed when she dropped it...so yeah for me insurance is totally worth it.

Up until this morning I've never replaced a phone due to damage. Doh!

Sucks for sure.

I'd check with your homeowners insurance for the next one. My wife and I have iPhone 4's. Have them both scheduled on our home policy for the replacement amount of $600. Costs about $40 a year and if anything happens from dropping it to the thing just not starting up, we call our company and they send a check. No deductible, no refurb crap, just a check in the mail for replacement cost. And it doesn't count as a claim on our "record".

Worth looking into.

I was getting into the elevator in a parking garage a few weeks ago.  I think the 9th floor or something.  There was a gap between the elevator and the floor, maybe an inch and a half or so.  As I was getting on, a gentleman was getting off and holding his phone.  It slipped out of his hand (he was wearing a glove) and it fell right into the gap.  We both looked down and knew it was a gonner.  He let out a sigh and put his head down as if this was the topping on what had been an awful day.  I got on the elevator and went about my way...
