I'm looking into ways to raise money for a charity ride that supports cancer research at Ohio State University. Here is and idea I have. Let me know your thoughts and if you would participate in this if it was in your area.

My thought was to raffle off a bike helmet, a Rudy Sterling. I would sell raffle tickets for $5 each for the month of July. The shop would display the helmet and sell tickets throughout the month, I would also sell the tickets at our local club rides and club meeting in July. Then all proceeds from the raffle would be donated to the charity ride.

Whats your thoughts? if you went into your local bike shop and saw this would you buy a ticket for $5 or does this sound like a bad idea?

It would really depend.  I am hit up almost everyday to donate to schools, sports, teams, arts, music, bikes, etc....  I have donated a lot art work lately also.  It might depend upon whether or not it was something I was interested in.  I think it is a good idea, but it is very hard to say how much money will be raised.

i personally never buy raffle tickets.  i will gladly pay for an event or meal as a fundraiser.  i will also pay for "if i raise xxx i will do YYY" when someone i know will do something silly/goofy (a youth minister at my last church that had dreds did a fundraiser for their summer mission trip where you could donate to either SHAVE or SAVE and at the end of the fundraiser whichever had the most money won.  it was pretty fun...the elders donated A LOT to get rid of the dreds.)

I think a bike helmet is something most of us have already. Even if it's a really nice one, that style may not apeal to a large group.

I would much rather have a free entry at the next race.

I wouldn't put in $5. Maybe a $1 if I was already purchasing something at the store. I'm more likely to donate to an event type of thing.

I guess I'm the minority, sorta. I normally don't do raffle tickets but I would probably do $5 for a chance at a Rudy.

Sorry, not to be mean but I've raised thousands of dollars without much effort. So with that being said....

There's a million other ways to do fund raising with much better 'items'.

Silent auctions and virtual races are two of the best ways that I've had success with.

I said yes, but you would have to buy the helmet first, the helmet would have to be special (like a pro aero helmet), and when visiting the bike store, the person behind the cash register would have to say something like, "one of our closest regulars is doing a charity ride, bought this helmet and is raffling this helmet with ALL proceeds going to the charity."

I don't think I'd buy a $5 raffle ticket for a regular helmet, but maybe would at $1 per ticket. If it was a top o' the line aero helmet maybe I would do $5. I would recommend contacting companies directly to try and get donated products to raffle for charity (helmets, store gift certificates, gu, wetsuits, bike shorts, or any other gear would do). If you have a bigger prize pool, people will be more likely to buy a ticket since they have a better chance at winning something. I'd pay $5 for sure then. You could either assign the prizes ranks and first picked gets highest ranked prize, or let the first picked person get first pick and so on.

I'd put in $5 for a raffle for a new road bike but not a helmet.  In fact I'd put in $20.
