This is my first 70.3 after doing 4 Sprint length races. I was wondering about the grade and length of the three hills mentioned in posts from other years.

The first climb (around mile 28) is about a half mile long, and just under 300 feet of climbing.
(around 12% grade per Strava)

The second climb (around mile 35) is a little longer (.6 miles) and less climbing (~220 feet), but this comes after 4 miles of uphill (~480 feet of climbing).
(around 6% grade per Strava)

The last hill (around mile 39) is about .7 miles long and around 240 feet of climbing.
(around 6% grade per Strava)

The key is to not go crazy on the first part of the ride when you usually have a tailwind and it is pretty flat. The second half of the race has the climbs, and then you usually have a headwind coming back to transition.

Hope that helps.

Chris

This.  I have always found the second climb to be the hardest, because it's preceded by a long, false (and not so false) several miles of rollers and uphills, it has f&&&ed with my mind every time.   The first climb, you can see the top, so it's steep but not bad.  Last climb is a little misleading, as there is another short climb right afterwards, but as I recall the last uphill tops out at 42 miles in.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
