Subject: Route Tracker accuracy?

I've been putting some of my rides into the route tracker and find what seems to be very high numbers for feet climbing. For those of you with GPS or other methods have you seen the numbers to be accurate?

Today's ride one portion of 20 miles it says I climbed 4544 feet. Just seems a little high...and I'm curious as to the accuracy.

Have you found distance to be spot on accurate?

I don't have any independent equipment to use for climb comparison, but I'd tend to agree with you.  I'd guess off the top of my head the the numbers run maybe 15-25% high.  But that's just a guess.  I mean, who want to argue with impressive climbing figures, right?

My computer shows slightly higher distances than those indicated by the route tracker.  I can't be certain, but I think one short ride comes up as 18.75 on the route tracker and maybe 19.5 on my bike computer.  I think the route tracker shows 1600(?) ft of climbing, when I'd guess it's closer to 1300-1400 or so.

If I remember correctly, you upload via GPX right?  What I did was import your route as mine, reset the elevation and it went to 2070 feet.  A lot better I think?

So do you use GPX upload on this route?

If you want to fix it, go into edit your route, TURN OFF the elevation graph then 'reset route elevation' and resave...change it back to private too.

What is GPX upload?

I just open new route, click on the route I go, then save it. Is that a GPX?

Oh, I had a suspicion that you uploaded the route from a Garmin GPX file or something.  But you didn't and you were actually plotting the route.  That does help.

I would reset your elevation anyway per above as there were a few points in question.

This can be due to either an incorrect elevation value from the USGS service (rare but it happens) or from something I've just noticed:

There's a bug on a few routes where the actual elevation value for a point gets added as the elevation gain eg:  there's 10 feet of climbing so far and the current point is as 100 feet above sea level, the next point is at 105 feet above sea level but the climb gets calculated to be 115 feet. This happens rarely so I haven't figured out the cause yet.  I'm working on it.

As to distance, that's all straight from Google. Can you give me an example of a distance that appears to be off and something to compare it to?

Mary, can you give us some details about this? What route? Where on the map did this happen? Was there a specific set of circumstances that resulted in this eg. clicking on a specific point?

I need to be able to tell if it was the data being sent by the USGS or if it was the route tracker itself.

Marma

If you look on my "McCarren loop ne" route, the point where it jumps from the relative feet from start point to elevation is now labeled a location "big elevation jump" and is at 6.04 miles from the start.   It is in the Rancho San Rafael county park, just to the west of virginia ave/ Sierra street in the NW quadrant of my loop.

The funny part is that the elevation profile does not register this odd jump - it looks right.
