Malibu Triathlon - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log
Malibu, CA
United States
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 02m 34s
Overall Rank = 279/1052
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 59/138
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and ate a bowl of oatmeal and some coffee. For the locals, drove down Kanan from the 101 to the beach at 4:45 AM. There was a line of cars with bikes on racks. Let me tell you - the RACE was on. Too many adrenaline junkies on a curvy road.
Event warmup:

Jogged about 10-15 minutes, rode about 25 minutes, in the water for 15 minutes
Swim
  • 30m 49s
  • 880 yards
  • 03m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

1/2 mile my eye! Did a .9 mile swim at the oly last week in 34 minutes, no way I did a hald in 31. That was the common perception among everyone. The surf was brutal though, surf crashing above your head. People were flying backwards if they didn't get far enough under the waves. The lifeguards were very busy. I guess there was a long line of people who came out of the water and quite the race. The lifeguards wouldn't let you swim all the way in. You had to wade in as soon as you could stand up so you did not get tumbled by the whitewater. That had to mess up some of the celebrities makeup!

I've been having foot problems and as soon as I started running on the sand I heard a snap in my foot and could barely put any pressure on that foot. I feared my race was over but I thought I could get on the bike and make that decision later. Turns out I was able to go on but later that day and today (the next) I have been limping pretty badly.
What would you do differently?:

Swim like Amanda Beard who was actually the swimmer for one of the relay teams. I was expecting Lance to be the bicyclist.
Transition 1
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

Alright transition. It was fun listening to people moan about the swim. Although it was rough it was the same for everyone.
Bike
  • 49m 26s
  • 18 miles
  • 21.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Thats right 74 out of a sold out race of 2000. Looks like 1052 age groupers finished but that 1052 doesn't seem to include the athenas, clydes, relays, celebrities (it is Malibu). Did I say 74? And my bike costs less than most others wheel sets. I wonder what would happen if I trined on the bike more than once a week?
What would you do differently?:

I don't know. Come in 73?
Transition 2
  • 02m 32s
Comments:

Oops. Got to my spot and someone had squished all their stuff over mine. I struggled to rack my bike then uncover my shoes. Put the shoes on and started running to the run start line. Big transition area (2000 competitors) and my rack was 6th from the last. Got to the run start and realized I forgot my RACE NUMBER BELT!!! Argh!!! Turned around after yelling something I shouldn't have and ran all the way back. Put the number belt on and saw my hat there all lonely so I put it on too. Oops.
What would you do differently?:

Hope to not get my nicely organized towel all messed up by someone else. It was a good learning experience though.
Run
  • 37m 35s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

I really hate running. I did an oly the week before and my body was still aching. I also didn't feel like I had the mind power to push through the pain. But I ran the best I could and got it over with. I hate running soooo much.
Post race
Warm down:

Unfortunately not much besides eating a big bowl of pasta salad. Only in Malibu would you get pasta salad with artichokes and capers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Body banged up from week before race. But you learn something from everything. I didn't really have that much expectations going in so it was all good. I don't think I performed to my training. I geared up heavy for the oly the week before. I guess this would be a "C" race.

Event comments:

This was an event more than a race. They had a celebrity division and a lot of the pretty people seemed to have to make an appearance. I haven't decided if thats good or bad. It was just different than other races. Malibu is most definitely a gorgeous place to be let alone race. It reminded me how lucky I am to live in the area.

Good job on two races in two weeks. The thought of that swim though sends me further into to the desert.

Nice job on the bike. I know just how nasty those waves at Zuma can get. 31 Minutes for a 1/2 mile is way off. They must have measured wrong. Did u wear a wetsuit? One workout a week on the bike? How'd you get so good?

I am with you on the swim.  I'm not sure what wave you went in on, but they removed the far left bouy when I got in, and it was still too long.  I did 27 min for .9 and 33 for 1/2, even with ocean waves, it isn't right.

And I am with you in regard to the event, it wasn't didn't have a triathlon atmosphere at all.  Plus all of the celebrity watchers out there and riding on speed bumps can cause slower times.  Honestly you would think that people would stay off the course, but I guess not.

I still felt like I raced to my potential, considering all the time off after Wildflower I was really happy.

But, I doubt I will do this race again, people in Malibu are annoying at best, I got flipped off on the bike ride from someone in a car, lets see them get their butt out here.  Dumba$$'s.

Great race Paul!!! My parents were there to watch all the action, cheering everyone on, so they probably gave you a "woo hoo!". Must have been cool seeing all the hoopla in Malibu. They said Kanan was a mess!!

Great bike time, congrats!!!

I was only lucky enough to have my fiance cheering for me.  Your parents might have seen her, she was the one with folding chair and Bride magazine, sitting where she could see parts of the bike and run.  She is getting too used to this racing thing.

If 1000 miles hadn't been separating myself from Zuma...of COURSE I would have been there!!! I cheered from Seattle, though!
