Subject: Ever been to Seattle?
My husband and I are bound for Seattle for Christmas to visit with my in-laws. They will be working part of the time during our visit so we are set free to tour the city on our own.

What are the must see sites in the Seattle/Tacoma area??? I've heard that there is a huge REI. Of course there is the first Starbucks. What else?

Also we will be spending part of our time in the Wenatchee area. What's fun to do around there?

Thanks a bunch!!!

Hey Bethany! I am currently living in Seattle, so hopefully I can give you some places to see.

1. Pike's Place Market in Downtown Seattle. It's definitely more fun during the summer, but there's wonderful vendors and, of course, fish throwing!

2. The Space Needle. Also in Seattle. Gotta see what made the "Fraiser" skyline!

3. EMP (Experience Music Project) - Right next to the Space Needle. If anything, just walk on the outside of this music museum because the building is designed by Frank Gehry, and you HAVE to see it!

(if you want to go silly style, you can "Ride the Ducks", which is an 1.5 hour tour on amphibious vehicles that allow you to tour the city via land & sea).

4. The food!!! There's some fabulous dining in Seattle. Let me know if you want recommendations, I'm an eater!!!

I don't know Tacoma well at all, but you might want to consult http://seattle.citysearch.com

Have a great time!!! It's too bad you won't be here in summer, for the hiking is wonderful!!! But if you're skiiers at all, come check that out as well!

Seattle is great in the winter!

Cool things: Argosy Christmas Ships http://www.argosycruises.com/themecruises/xmas.cfm

Westlake Center in Downtown Seattle for shopping, Christmas Carousel, and great food.

Space Needle Restuarant, it revolves and you get to see Elliott Bay, Lake Union, and the many hills of Seattle. Go on a clear day for the best views. http://www.spaceneedle.com/restaurant/ You can compare the ride and sights of the Space Needle Restuarant to your own Atlanta revolving restuarant! It's a study in contrasts, in a way.

Wenatchee: Don't miss Leavenworth, a Bavarian style village. http://www.leavenworth.org/ My favorite place to stay is Enzian Inn. www.enzianinn.com If you are not a XC skier but want to it, they have complimentary equipment that you can use. If you are a XC skier, head to Lake Wenatchee State Park for miles of groomed trails (tracks and skate lanes).

I could go on, but I need to work!

Thanks for all the great ideas. I made a list. We'll be out there for 12 days so we've got plenty of time to do a lot of activities.

Can't wait to get out of Atlanta and see some real mountains!

You can even make Leavenworth a day trip from Seattle, but it is definitely worth staying overnight. You won't find bourbon chicken in Seattle that tastes as good as it does in Atlanta.

I liked the Pike's Place Market. I would have liked it even better if I lived there and could carry away a whole bunch of stuff with me.

One of the interesting things I did when I was there was to take the Underground Seattle tour. That was really pretty cool - we went down under the city (as it is today) and looked at some of the places that used to exist. It sort of brought Seattle history alive for me. I also bought a couple of the books available there on the history of Seattle and they were very interesting reading as well - I don't know if they were 100% historically accurate, but seeing the city that way and getting those books really brought Seattle alive for me.

My sister moved to Seattle about a year ago (Attending Bastyr University) and I'm going to be going out next summer to visit. She has sent me some fantastic photos - I can't wait to get out there!

Have a great trip!

Iwent to school in Tacoma ('91-'93), back then the old Town Hall had a Dale Chahuly display. I believe his glass blowing operation is still in Tacoma. Tacoma also has Point Defiance Park. But if youre going to do outdoor stuff hit the SanJuans, The Olympic Peninsula, or Mt. Ranier. There's also sports, see if the Sonics are in town, or the Junior A West Coast hockey team (Thunderbirds I think?).
There are a ton of good resteraunts, where ever you go make sure you eat the fish and drink the local beers.
Pike Place is fun, but I've only been in the spring.

The San Juans are great, The Olympic Peninsula is gorgeous. Port Angles is a great little B&B type town.
