I was over on slowtwitch and saw a useful new idea, new to me at least. For the November swim challenge on that site they are using a Google spreadsheet to let everyone record their own goals and daily progress. I'm sure that kind of online document would work for some of our challenges too. Check it out if you're interested.

Check out docs.google.com for a description of the online doc system. For their swim challenge they have created a spreadsheet that everyone in the challenge can edit online. It contains cell formulas to total up daily distance entries, automatically convert between yards and meters, compare totals and goals, etc. Pretty much anything you would expect a spreadsheet to do, just letting everyone take care of their own data entry.

That sounds fantastic from a team leaders point of view!!! And it would make the challenges easier to set up!

I REALLY like this spreadsheet.

BUT, what's to keep people from messing it all up? For example, say n00bieX logs in, and accidently deletes half the columns?

If we can work out how to prevent this, I think it's a great idea.

The answer may just be that we just download it frequently to our personal computers. That way, we'd have a relatively recent backup copy all the time. Worst case, people might need to re-enter their data for that day.

(Cat - check out some of the goals these people have! Kind of inspires me for next month! LOL)

Maybe there is a way of locking the cells or something based on login? I dont know...

The goals are great... will be interesting to see what us BTers can come up with next month

OK, since I have nothing to do this weekend.... (Hahahahaha!)

I'll try to set up one of these. (For my team, of course!)

It was really easy to do this.

You just create a Google Docs account. Then you upload an existing spreadsheet.

(Don't try to create the spreadsheet directly on Google Docs. For me, with dial-up, it was more difficult to move around the online spreadsheet.)

If you want people to access it themselves, you can add their email addresses.

Very cool!

OK, take a look at this:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=puhAA5NRKHA1WLsma93eYbw

1) Set up a Google Docs account.
2) Upload the spreadsheet.
3) Change the "Share" option to public - so everyone can see it.
4) Add emails for the team members, so they can edit it. (I haven't done this step yet.)

Then everyone can enter their own data. VERY much easier than having all the team leaders enter the info for each person....
