Hello Everybody,
I've been on this site (training log) for a couple of weeks and reading alot of great stuff from everybody. Just thought I'd say THANKS to all for some great advise and to Ron for this wounderful training aid. I decided to try a "TRI" a few month back to help get back in shape. I'm a firefighter and have been letting myself go since the birth of our Triplets five years ago. I explained to my wife what I wanted to do and the next thing I know she has signed us up at the YMCA and enrolled me in the Y's Tri-Group. The group has help greatly and my wife, I can't say enough, she has backed me from day one w/ proper meals, books (Triathlon 101) and alotting time to train. Hope to complete my first Tri in may here in Texas. I do have a question if anyone could help? The traning workout for running states to run 2 miles for the first 2 1/2 weeks. I can run 2 miles w/ an 8.5 / 9 min/mile with a heart rate in the 80% to 85%, but I don't think I can kept that pace for anything over 2 miles. If I slow the pace and run 2 mile will I still be getting an benifits from the run? Thanks & Have a great day.

Here's a link to a Mark Allen article in a post made a couple of months back that deals with your question:

wow...u wont be able to slack off with your wife being so supportive!  that is great.

about the run...not that i am any expert...far from it...( i learn by failing or getting injured)  i dont heart rate train but go by feel (RPE).  ANYWAYS, yes, u can go slow and get benifits.  as your fitness improves your pace will increase to stay in the same HR zone.  now i have never read triathlon 101...how does it calculate HR zones?  if its the age formula...watch it.  is your breathing very labored last half of your run?  r u mantaining a 'conversational pace.'  the pace must be easy, breezy my freind.

Wow, your wife is an awesome support mechanism! I am jealous, mine just snickers at me as I run out of the house. I think I need to "pave" more of my tri-training with my family!

It seems that running at virtually any pace will get you benefit, even walking fast will get your heart rate into a beneficial zone. The more you do the easier it gets, just take it slow and use the 10% increase rule. Welcome to the site and hats off to you for starting your tri-goals and tackling triplets. My two keep me busy. Three the same age, I would not get out of the house. Good luck with your training.

My wife is going the the Y for spinning and alittle running, but unable to get her in pool, yet.
Hopefully it won't be long. It would be great to had a training partner. Be safe!

Welcome to the site.  Stands to reason that the father of TRIplets should be a TRIathlete!  Good luck!  Be patient with the pace.  Keeping that HR in check is a good investment of your time.  If you have a HR monitor it'll be easier to track how fast (or slow) you need to be.

Skip - Welcome. With Trips and a supportive wife - this will be a great sport for you. Running - yes - the slower runs will help. In fact, try some interval taining - walk briskly 2 min - run 2 - walk 3 run 3 etc. throw in a couple of wind sprints. Let the walk times gradually diminish and then you will find you can recover with slower jogging and you will be running full time. Ditto with Ron - don't get too hung with the HR numbers. I wear one, but just to keep a long term record of how my cardio efficiency is improving.
