I just moved across the bay to Clearwater. Don't know how much help I can be, but I'll try.

Sort of -- we're by Tyndall AFB, but have gone out to Eglin a number of times. What kind of info are you looking for?

I'm looking for the tri perspective on the area.  Lifestyle perspectives too.  How far away is stuff?  How bad is the humidity?  You know...that sorta stuff.

I went through survival school at Eglin when I was at AOCS in Pensacola.  (Pensacola is about 60 miles to the west).  That was back in the mid-70's, and there has been a lot of development along the coast since then.

Florida is hot and humid in the summertime, but the breeze off the gulf can help to moderate things somewhat.  Being able to workout year 'round is great as long as you don't do it in the middle of the day.  It's pretty flat so you have to be innovative to get in any hill work; at the same time riding in strong winds can be a challenge.

The climate also provides a 12 month growing season for bugs and other critters.

I lived there for 25 years or so.  Destin (close to the beach) is very nice.  Lots of water, sunshine and summertime traffic.  You can surf, waterski, dive, etc.  The weather in October and November can be very nice.  Summer weather is hot and breezy with humidity.  There is an active triathlon scene with races in Destin, Panama City, and Pensacola.  My suggestion is to go to the local tri store Dragon Sports for more information.  I haven't lived there in 5 years so I don't know if the store is still around.  If not, go to a local bike shop.  Hope this helps.

I like visiting the area around Eglin. Destin and it's surrounding towns are nice and well-maintained, at least compared to the area right next to Tyndall. The summers are quite hot and humid and took a while for me to adjust to. It's great from October-April or so though. There's a decent tri community in the Panhandle, with races from late April or so until early November. I go to the Dragon Sports store mentioned above; it's in Fort Walton Beach. There are several bike clubs in the area and a couple running/tri clubs too.

I was at Keesler, but raced on the Panhandle a few times. There are some pretty cool races out there. The Gulf Coast Tri (70.3) and IMFL are in Panama City, there's the Destin Crab Trap Tri, Emerald Coast race series, Mulletman... It's humid and miserable in the summer, but the winters are really mild and you can train outside year round.
